How do they assign rooms at DVC?

We stayed at 2 resorts in mid-Feb. At both VWL and BWV our room was pre-assigned.

Two years before at BCV our room was assigned at check-in. We didn't get to pick - they looked at a screen and picked one after indicating the view I requested was not available.
