How do so many people NOT understand FP?

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this: in DisneyLand a few years ago, while our family was using the FP line, we encountered people standing in the standby line giving us dirty looks, even making rude comments about the fact that we were somehow "cutting" in line or being given special treatment. This was a fairly regular occurance for those of us in the FP line. :confused3

With information posted everywhere about FP, how is it that so many people still don't understand it? I know it doesn't do me any good asking here, because if you're on the DIS, you are a planner and more knowledgable about Disney! :teeth: I just don't understand how you'd pay a lot of $$ for a vacation, then not research it at all, even the basics like what FP is. Anyone else experience this, or maybe someone here used to BE that person who didn't understand FP? If so, what was your experience? Just curious if we'll have that happen to us in Dec. at DisneyWorld...maybe people understand it better now. :thumbsup2

Yes, I remeber going into Splash Mountain with my Fast Pass time of 3:30pm. By then, the parks were packed. It was the middle of July and the stand by line was well over an hour long. The Fast Pass line was practically empty! As I breezed through the "line" I heard some shouts of "Cutter!" behind me. :rotfl: I really don't know why many people don't take advantage of this. Oh well, more Fast Passes for us. ;)

Glad to hear it's not just us! It really is a problem for us because my kids are big rule followers (my oldest especially worries about following all rules, which is fine by me :thumbsup2 ) and it really took some convincing that we were doing something that was ok. I hate that they hear rude comments and worry that we're "cheating". If it happens at WDW, I'll have to stop and try to explain it to people...just for my kids' sakes!

I believe the problem is the majority of people don't reseach their trips to Disney. Probably more than 90% of the travel agents don't know much about Disney either.

I always get a kick out of showing people my fastpass ticket and informing them how they too may "cheat the system" and become an official member of the "Disney Linecutters Association." I've even tried to help people use the fastpass machines and they still don't understand it. Like Julygirl said, oh well, more fastpasses for me!!!

Yes, I have seen this too, and I can't believe how much people lack common sense. If we were "cutting" line, surely a Disney cast member would stop us, right? The fact that they let us breeze on through should tell the folks in the standby line something.

I also experienced a funny moment at Disneyland, when the couple in front of me used the FASTPASS kiosk, and became distressed because their return time was 3 hours later - "that's even longer than the wait in line!" wailed the woman. I pointed out however, that unlike the people waiting in line, she could leave the area, ride other rides, and then come back. Ohhhhhhh.....she hadn't thought of that!

Our favorite this last December were people that got there fast pass and then went and stood outside the entry way for the fp line until their time was there. We saw it several times at the safari line. If you are going to just stand there you might as well go walk and stand in line. Many times by the time you walk all that way there isn't much of a wait, at least in early december. And it is a more pleasant place to wait!!!

Wow...that reminds me of the other thing we've seen...people standing by the line entrance, waiting for their FP time (starting their wait right after they get their FP ticket). Unbelievable. :rotfl:

My old roommate on the college program came home one night with a story about this man that just WENT OFF on her when she cut the line off at merge point right before him and his family. He starts screaming, yelling and cussing at her and how Fast Pass is a scam for the rich (wouldn't listen to her trying to explain that anyone with a ticket can get a fast pass, and unless he snuck in he too can get one). . . one of the guys overheard and took over her spot, made her go inside. This guy wouldn't stop and it eventually escalated to this guy actually jumping the CM and start pounding on him. Yeah, he was escorted out and asked not to return.

My other pet peeve is people who show up five or ten minutes early for their FP time and then stand right at the entrance to the FP line, blocking it for people whose time has already begun. A number of times we have had to shoulder our way through a herd of people to get in the FP line when it was our time. I don't get it...the FP time gives you a wide time frame. Why stand there early? And why stand directly in front of the gate? :confused3 Doesn't seem like a hard concept to me, but we saw this everywhere.

And have you ever tried to give a FP you can"t use to someone  They look at you like you are trying to give them a bomb. But I agree with the above posters, the worst is the people who jam up the FP area waiting for their time.

And I forgot yell at the CM for not letting them in early :sad2:

I listened to a guy explain to his son that they could not use the FP system because their travel agent did not book them that type of ticket.

I truly feel sorry for the kids who have to watch people race by them in the FP line because their parents are too ignorant to figure it out. And those parents are usually telling their kids the FP is just for "rich people" which puts a downer on the kids' vacations.

The last time I went to Disney was summer 2003, and the fastpass system was fairly new at that time. So whenever we'd go through the fast pass line, the people in the regular line would all look at us with this puzzled expression on their face like: "what are they doing?" or "who do they think they are?" It was kind of cool, it made us feel all important and special.

So I really don't understand how after YEARS of having the fastpass system in use, how these people cannot understand how it works and use it to their advantage. We even try to cheat the fastpass system by getting another fastpass 10 minutes into our time frame. I agree- if you're going to spend all that money, you should do your research and get your money's worth!

I think that in general, people are just quite stupid. But that's ok, because that means more fastpasses for those of us who know what we're doing.

So the next time you get in the fastpass line, just walk through briskly and ignore those who make comments or faces. Just pay attention to each other. Besides, they're just jealous :smooth:

OMG I thought it was just me! I tried to give my unused FP away to 3 different people one day and ALL looked at me as if I was trying to give them a bag filled with dog poop! (or a bomb, lmao!)

Wassup with all the peeps who don't know what the FP is? :confused3

What I don't get is that at least in January, the fastpass system was described in simple terms on every park map. We encountered a family from Canada in line for RnRC (we had fastpasses at ToT and were in the RnRC standby line) who was on their last day of their vacation, and we finally explained fastpass to them. I felt so bad!

I experienced a group of people who assumed that me and everyone around me knew nothing about fastpass. I was in the standby line of Splash Mountain, I was holding a fastpass for Indy (this is at Disneyland obviously.) A group went past us in the fastpass line of Splash and was making remarks to the effect that those of us in the standby line must be idiots because we weren't using fastpass. I wanted to explain to them that I know very well what fastpass is and that I could also only have one of them at a time, so since the Splash standby line was far shorter than the Indy standby line, I got a fastpass for Indy and rode standby on Splash. But they went by before I could formulate a coherent thought, so that was that.

I agree totally with this statement. My aunt and uncle are spending some time with our family on our next trip and they used a TA because they had a gift certificate. They have never been to Disney before and are looking for us to guide them. Good thing they have us to help out, because that TA has done nothing! She didn't tell them about ADRs and 180 day windows. I told my uncle he'll be better off getting info from us rather than her. She probably isn't a Disney specialist and doesn't DIS :disrocks:

As for those people who don't research their trip and fly by the seat of their pants especially if they are not veterans to Disney, shame on them for wasting their money. Good news for the rest of us! :thumbsup2

These same people who don't do any research are the ones that come home and tell everyone how much they hated Disney World. I have told tons of people that it just isn't a vacation that you can take without lots of research. If you don't know what you are wanting to do you won't get it done.
