How do I sneak something through security?

We'll be at WDW for DD's 13th birthday. A coworker offered me his 2year old netbook for $100. DW & I thought that would be a great gift for DD.

In an ideal world, I'd love to get it to Fl with us and give it to her on her birthday. BUT, how do I get it through security without her noticing? I don't want to put it in checked luggage, and if I try to carry it on, she'd see it when we go through screening (even if she goes through first and I go through last, I think the odds are pretty good she'd notice it.

The other option is shipping it ahead, but then that cuts down on the "deal".

Any ideas?

Wait, did you think I meant something else with my thread title?

I'd just bite the bullet and ship it down ahead of time.:)

And yes, I did think you meant something else :goodvibes

Perhaps you or dear wife could have a "bathroom" emergency or need to "buy" something at the airport store while going through security. That one could dash off to take care of the "emergency" while the other takes daughter through. Then, go through alone with the laptop and meet up when it's safely stowed back in the carry on so the birthday girl doesn't see it.

Expanding on bevgray suggestion, are you parking a car at the airport? If so, drop Dw and DD off at the airport and tell them that you will meet them at the gate after you park the car. Then you go through security alone.

Have to admit...I was a wee bit concerned for a quick moment there!!! Title had me going.
How many of you are going??? I would manage to get myself split off from the group. One of those ...'Oh man, I realllllllly need to use the bathroom, I'll meet you at the gate.' moments.
Or ship it ahead of time.

An important business call comes through? You have to take it and tell your family to go on through and get seats at the gate for all of you.

I haven't looked it up but I vaguely remember that netbooks are not considered laptops, more like a kindle or an iPad. If so, you can just leave it in your carry-on going through security.:confused3

To answer questions... while the splitting up sounds good, it's probably not practical... we have two other kids DS7 & DD5. I wouldn't feel right having DW take all the kids. Although maybe if I can get DS to have a "bathroom emergency"... lol

Not a good idea to joke that way.....TSA gets word of this and you may find yourself red flagged for inspection and delay.

I would change the title

FANTASTIC way to ensure that your thread is read! :thumbsup2

I agree with everyone else - find a way to split up. Yes, blame it on DS5 - "sorry but I just HAVE to make sure little Johnny doesn't have an accident. Go ahead through security and we'll catch up"

Good luck sneaking through security!

I'd give it to her early and let her use it on the flight.

Otherwise you need an excuse to go through security separately. Park the car works. You check all the bags. Have your wife and kids go to the gate area to save you a good seat. Tell the kids you'll meet them at the gate and ask them to have coffee and a breakfast sandwich waiting for you when you meet them.

buy a neoprene type sleeve for the netbook. The computer does not have to be removed from the sleeve. I travel with my laptop inside the sleeve. I then take the entire thing out and put it thru security in the sleeve. I am going to guess if she goes thru first and you go last that she won't even notice it in the rush to get everything together.....

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. Put the netbook in a sleeve, act as if it is YOURS, send it through security and tuck it back in your bag.

Though TSA says netbooks don't necessarily have to be removed from carryons at security...you never know if they will make you take it out, so the sleeve keeps it mostly hidden.
If you had a plan to gift wrap it, that should wait until after you clear security... because that could throw a wrench in the plan.

Really? I'm sure the TSA has "spies" going through the Dis, see the title, not read the thread, then do the research to see when I'm flying, where I'm flying from (all of which has been posted on different threads), and flag me for inspection and delay.:sad2:

Where does the thread title say anything about TSA? It's not until you read the post you find out what I'm talking about. If you read the post, you find out I'm trying to keep something secret from my DD, not the TSA.

I'm sorry you're so paranoid, but the title stays.

Can you just get in a different security line than your DW? I know we had something that they don't normally inspect have to get opened up and checked- might have been dvd player. If you don't want to give it early (which I would do- great to have to use on flight), you will want to go through security separately. Maybe you could give the laptop before the flight, and then an accessory or game on her actual birthday.

There are two security lines at our home airport, but I don't think they're always open. I also don't remember if one is "family" and the other "frequent flier".

I would go thru different lines and pretend it was a race to see who finishes first. That way you would be in different isles and they wont see the contents of the bag

Not to be nosey, but what do you do for a living? Could you say that the office lent you the computer so you'd be able to check work email or something?

Not a bad idea, except DW will have her laptop and DD is smart enough to know I can use that. Also, DD would be begging to use my "work" netbook.:lmao:
