How do I size ice skates?

DD8 wants a pair. She has been asking for a pair for Christmas for 3 years, and it just hadn't been a priority. Well, this being the 3rd year she has it on her list, I figure it is time she open up some ice skates Christmas morning.

She wears a size 1 in sneakers and shoes. Are skates the same?

A good pair of skates can make all the difference. Skates should fit snugly with a small amount of room to grow. Skates are also sized by width and when laced the laces should be about an inch and a half apart at the ankle. Skates under a size 3 will run about the same as shoe size. Size 4 and up will run a size to a size and a half smaller than shoe size. Skates should be leather, not vinyl, and should provide good ankle support.

We bought them for our girls last year for Christmas. I bought them bigger than their shoe size, and brought them back after Christmas to have them sized properly and sharpened. They ended up needing their shoe size, and I am sure they won't fit this year. A good sporting goods store should be able to help you.
