How do I make my camera quiet?

Hi there! I have a digital rebel XTi and so far so good. There is one thing I hate; that whenever you snap a picture you hear the shutter click! If you're taking pictures in a quiet location you don't really want people to hear the shutter make that noise.

Is there anyway to turn it off? Is there a quiet mode?

Thank you! :)

It is a SLR, and not a digital camera like a p&s where you control the shutter noise. That is the noise of an actual physical shutter and mirror moving. Unfortunately, it is impossible to change. On the bright side, it is not as bothersome to others as you might think it is.

Yeah, it's not a P&S, so you can't "turn off noises" It's the actual camera doing it's work. On the upside, when you use an SLR, people tend to give you more elbow room as you look more "professional", especially when using big white lenses. ;)

The shutter moving is not all of the noise, there is also the mirror dropping down. To me that slap is the louder part of the noise. THis is the same noise you have with a 35mm SLR, actually my older Canon A-1 is way louder. Also it is the same type of noise that will come from any professional photographers camera, so I never thought about it bothering anyone. I just used my DSLR and my A-1 (for its faster telephoto lens :) ) at my DD's recital and no one even noticed me.

Thanks for answering! Hmmm, I definitely learned something today! I'm still very new at SLR photography and my old point and shoot did have a way to turn off the noise so I just assumed that the SLR camera would too! Oh well, I'll just have to be creative here. I like to take pictures during concerts (the artists I see allows this) and I don't want to disrupt the people around me with a camera making noise. I'll just wait for the louder songs to take pictures! :o) Thanks again! I love the photography board. You guys are just so knowledgeable. No matter what the question, somebody here always knows the answer! :goodvibes

It jut occured to me... you are not talking about the beeping are you? You can turn the beeping when you push the buttons off. I took this as you were talking about the shutter noise.

This is funny - I asked the VERY SAME thing when I got my xti - I was going to my daughters Christmas recital at school and I was worried about the same thing - People here gave me some great advice - It is NOT as bothersome to others as you think - People with P & S that do NOT turn off their beep - people with video cameras and hold their camera up high to tape (and block others views) among other numerous answers.

Click away - Don't worry about it - and have fun!!!!
