I think the OP's friends are being mean, and that she has the right to wear whatever she wants; but I've never heard before today that white symbolizes joy.
I knew about the purity meaning and about Queen Victoria, but joy? I just don't see it. I can't think of a less joyous color that white -unless is black. White is a serious, formal, elegant, classy color. White wedding dresses are a tradition, and I that's the reason they ar worn.
OP, I'm sure your gown is beautiful and you will look radiant in it because you are happy. Have a wonderful wedding!
