How do I get to HHI?

I was able to book a few nights at HHI, which I'm very excited about! But now I've realized that this is not a trip to WDW, so I need to figure out how to get there. If you've been there, what airport have you flown into? Then I'm assuming I'll rent a car and drive there. How long will that take?

The closest airport is Savannah airport, and from there to the resort is less than 1 hour. The next closest is Charleston, SC, which we've used a few times since Savannah is sometimes very expensive. That one takes us 2-2 1/2 hours. Then there's Jacksonville, which we only used once and came in very late at night so it took us 3 1/2 hours. There was tons of construction back then, and that coupled with the dark-it may take less time now. We've been to the resort so many times now, I forget directions, just turn at the McDonald's when getting off the highway (Rte 17 from Savannah?), then take 278. At the Palmetto Dunes sign on the island (Mile Marker 8 or so), turn right.

You will be traveling north on I-95 if you fly into Savannah or Jacksonville. Take Exit 8 (US 278) east (in SC) and you will get to HHI. It's a pretty easy drive except for am rush hour when it might take more than one hour to get to the island.

Rent the car and put the address into the on-board GPS or the GPS on your phone. Enjoy - it's a very nice resort

You can also fly into Hilton Head itself. Most connections are thru Charlotte. The resort is less than 10 minutes from the airport.

Try to get there during the day. HHI is really dark at night because of light restrictions on the island.

THe other question is getting from said airport to the resort.

If you come into Sav/HHI here in SAvannah, you have three ways to get there. One you can take I-95 south to I-16, take the Savannah exit (not Macon) and just stay on the road over the big bridge (doesn't really have a name yet), take a right on SC 315 and go on to HHI.

If you go out the airport and take the right into Pt Wentworth, you can drive through the very nice Savannah River Wildlife Refuge (related to Pinckney Island), take a right on 170 and on to HHI.

Or the boring take I-95 North to 278, take the right at the exit and it's a straight shot from there to HHI. Quickest and boring.

No matter what, drive the speed limit while on the way (specially in Bluffton). It's not as bad a speed trap as it use to be, but, southern town...economy not as good as it use to be...get my drift? When I was a child, they were MUCH worse about it.

Your favorite map web site will give you directions no matter what way you want to go.

Thanks for all the advice! I didn't even know there was an airport in Hilton Head! All I had really read here on the Dis were reports of people flying into Savannah. Since the flights were pretty expensive no matter where I was going, I booked the one into HHH (with the stop in Charlotte) and got a good rate on a rental car in the process.
