How do I get rid of my neighbors cats?

One time, while visiting a friend, I started singing to her two cats. They couldn't run fast enough. Didn't see them during my whole visit...:rolleyes1

We are going to try orange peels and coffee grinds to start with. And yes, part of the reason we need to get them out from under the house is because they are tearing stuff up and we are trying to put new underpinning up. We have only lived here just over a year and taking projects one at a time. I need to get the cats out so I can put up the underpinning and not have these cats trapped under my house to die.

As I sit here typing this there is another cat sitting outside my window.

As far as shooting at the dogs...I have a BB pistol that I shoot. My husband uses a 410 shotgun. But I am not going to wait for them to attack my DD before I try to do something. Prevention is better. They are lucky we have not actually shot the dogs. That is what we truly want to do. I don't like pit bulls and have no use for them. If they wouldn't name them "Killer" I would try to be more understanding. As I said, we live in the county not city. There is no animal control in the county either. We are very responsible gun owners. We keep them locked up in a gun safe and don't just shoot at random. We would never take any chances. My yard is 1 1/2 acres fully fenced. I should be able to enjoy my yard without fear of a neighbors dog.

We had a neighbor(thankfully he moved) who had 12 or more dogs. All mutt types. He felt they should be allowed to roam. They all had the mange. We tried calling everybody. The JP, SPCA, the county...no one could do anything. When he lost his house and moved he left the dogs...all of them. The realtor notified the county, the county came out and dumped a 50lb bag of food for them. The county told us to shoot them and to call them back when they were all dead and they would remove them. The neighbors took turns killing them. The county came back and buried them in the back yard and put lime powder all over the yard.

You are aware that you are breaking the law a few ways by shooting at the dogs. I mean you can't just pull out a gun and start shooting for no reason other than a dog is loose.

Hmm well it is Texas...

Wait...OMG the county told people to shoot dogs??!??!! Holy crap.

No kidding! Does Texas not have some kind of law against animal cruelty? Are counties allowed to just go around promoting the killing of people's pets?

FWIW if you have cats living UNDER your mobile home, that means that other animals could get under there too. Your home should have some sort of perimeter barrier so critters can't get under there and do damage. Pulling out insulation, moisture/urine, etc can do tons of damage and cost you lots of $$. Time to put up some rabbit hutch wire or something similar to keep ALL critters out. As it is, if you get rid of the cats you'll probably just end up with squirrels, mice, rats, etc. under there. If you feel like you can't afford the barricade then you certainly can't afford the damage that could be done.

These were my thoughts as well.

Here is a number for the Animal Control Warden that seems to be closest to your area. Please call. Seems like it's easier than picking up a gun, geez.

just let the dogs out.. problem solved

I hope that was tongue in cheek.

I don't get folks (not saying you are) that cry bloody murder if someone touches one hair on a dogs head but then turn around and treat cats as if they were rodents and fair game for whatever tragic fate meets them. A domestic pet is a domestic pet. Their fates should be treated equally, regardless of whether you happen to like them or not.

Re: Getting rid of the cats

I'd get some humane traps and once you've trapped them, drop them off at the nearest animal control office to you. If you show up on their doorstep, they are not going to turn you away. If you know anyone (or know anyone who knows anyone) with a farm, they might be willing to take the cats for you. You can also call some vets in your area and see if they will put the cats down if you bring them in. You'll probably have to pay for it, but at least you will be rid of the cats. When you do any of these things, don't tell anyone that they are your neighbor's cats.

Re: Shooting at the Dog

I grew up out in the middle of nowhere (in TX even ;) ), and yeah, if a dog strayed onto our property and my dad didn't know it and/or it's owners well enough to know that the dog was friendly, then my dad would probably have shot it. He would have tried to scare it off first unless it looked rabid or something, but if that didn't work he would have shot it.

The OP's neighbors don't take good care of their pets. Who knows if the dogs are up to date on their vaccines? Not to mention, bad pitt bull owners=bad pitt bulls. If I was the OP, I'd make sure I didn't miss if the dogs repeatedly came onto my property. Shooting a potentially dangerous animal on your property does not violate animal cruealty laws.

Let me first say that I have lived in the country most of my life....but that is the one of the sickest and saddest things I have ever read. Those poor dogs and cats didn't have a choice about their circumstances. They're just trying to survive. If we can't be bothered to help the most defenseless among us, that is such a sad commentary on us.

I work in a field that you have to be emotionally tough to survive in, but your story honestly makes me want to cry.

I'm sorry my story upset you. We have not hurt any of the cats and don't intend to. That's why I posted. I want help in just getting them away from my house and somewhere else without being cruel.

As for the story with the dogs, yes in some ways it was sad, but had you seen the condition of the dogs with the mange and hungry because owners left them then you would also be assured they are in a better place now. They were suffering.

Those loose dogs are lucky they don't live near where my husband's best friend used to live in TX. He lived near an exotic animal "park", very loosely owned and run, and once came home to a police blockade b/c a couple of the "big cats" had gotten loose.

Rural anywhere is interesting, but rural Texas seems even more so!

That is *so* tag-worthy.
