My puppy loves to stick his left paw in his water dish and splash all over the place. I've asked him not to, but he looks at me like "fill it up with more water!" How do I get him to stop playing in his drinking water?

Boo would influence Poo Poo to be a bad boy too. He's an instigator.:teeth:

My back wouldn't forgive me if I showed Boo how to drink out of his dish, Jason.:teeth: Besides, !:teeth:

CC, Boo would just jump in the pot and jump out and shake water everywhere.

Shannon, I would try putting his water dish up except at times that you can be around to watch him (of course then you have to remember to give him frequent drinks). Every time he puts his paw in the water I would use a negative tone in my voice and say something like "No, keep your paws out of the water" Actually what you say isn't important, just that you say the same thing every single time. Then I'd pull his paw out and dry it off and do this over and over until he gets the point. Some dogs learn faster than others but a well trained dog is worth the effort it takes because they are so much more enjoyable when they are trained well.

Thanks for the advice, Keli.:) I do keep his water dish out all the time (it's a 2 hole dish, his food is on 1 side, his water on the other). He almost always put his paw in it when I put fresh water in it (I thought he was trying to sweeten the water when he first started doing it;)). He knows he's in trouble when he does it, I put on my mad mama voice. That usually makes him look at me like "what's your problem?":teeth: I swear, he's part human.:jester: I'll try to some of your ideas though.:) Thanks.:)

We bought a raised water dish/ food dish holder. It was low enough to drink out of, but high enough to keep our puppy out of trouble.

I agree with the raised water dish idea.

Target had some cool ones that weren't too spendy.

You're puppy sounds like he's pretty smart.

Have you seen the doggie ice cream they have out now? Bought some last night for my Sam and he went nuts over it.

herc.

Skippy's doing the same thing, Shannon! He loves to stick his paw in there and splash. :( Another mess to clean up! I'm starting to think of puppy training. He's already chewed up his plastic food bowl. He thought it was the greatest thing carrying that around the house and then chewing on it. I got rid of it yesterday. He now has a ceramic bowl. :teeth: Good luck!

He's also chewed up his mat that was under his bowls. :( Tossed that. Yesterday he started scratching Max's mat. I draw the line there!! So far, so good.

One of our cats always sticks his paw in the water before drinking. He doesn't tip it over, but splashes it around and makes a mess. We got one of those mats for putting wet shoes on and use it as a base for the food and water dishes so at least it's somewhat contained until we can clean it up.

Both cats are obsessed with water, but just the one does this with their drinking water.

My golden puppy did this too but eventually grew out of it. I second the vote for raising it up alittle.
