how do character meals actually work?

i haven't been since i was little and i didn't have to be responsible for making sure everything went smoothly back then lol

how do you time when to get food? what do you do when the characters come?

When you are seated, your CM will tell you "Um, Mickey will be by in just a couple min so you might want to wait"...or "You still have a few min before Goofy will be by, so you might want to go to the buffet now". They will let you know about the timing so you dont miss out.

When the characters come to your table, you will get a couple min w/ the character for interaction, pics, autographs...then they move on to the next table. If you are still there when they come around again, they still do a brief interaction, pics.

Also, the CM will likely tell you (and if not you can ask) which way the characters move through the dining room. They have a set "circuit" every time.

When you see a character 2 tables away from you, you can probably figure that an adult should be able to make a quick trip to the buffet before it's your turn, but it's probably not the best time to take a little one to the potty.

Though I would also suggest that if you are in a restaurant that does special activities (i.e. Crystal Palace does a parade) ask your server when that will happen too.
