How disruptive are GF re-furbs?

we have received a letter this morning from our tour operator advising that the GF will be refurbishing rooms during our stay in November. They are saying that it will just be re-decorating, painting, carpet laying etc. Has anyone been to a resort while they are refurbishing and what is the likelihood of it disrupting our holiday.

The tour operator states between the hours of 9 and 5 when we are likely to be out of the room but I don't really want to be smelling paint all night.

Thanks.

Over the years we've been to several WDW Resorts during refurbishments.

They usually do an excellent job of "compartmentalizing" the construction. We've never had an issue with it.

We were in the Poly last year during the refurb and we had no problem with odor or noise. Disney does a great job of disguising the work area until the big reveal.

Being that the GF is a bunch of separate buildings, it's highly likely that they will close the entire building they're working on while it's being refurbished (which I believe is how they did it the last time it was refurbed), so you likely wouldn't even have a room in a building that is having work done. If not, at the very least they'll close off floors as they are worked on.

I've been in a couple of resorts during their refurbishment, and many times you wouldn't even notice it. Disney does a great job of working around the guests.

I really cant wait to see the new room decor. I love the GF.:goodvibes Maybe a renovated room will be done for your stay and you could request one ?

Thanks to you all for your advice, this really is our holiday of a lifetime (four years saving for our return) and I would hate a refurbishment to cause too many problems, we're never likely to be able to return to GF!

We'll be there early Dec. - do you know if the construction will still be going on then?

Dis Ohana - according to our later they are due to be completed by December 21st - hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply, Lisa. Looks like we'll be there at the tail end of it, we check out on the 15th. What type of room do you have booked? I haven't received a letter yet, I wonder if the construction is confined to certain buildings? We're in the RPC Main building.

We were there during the last big refurb in 2000. At that time, they took whole buildings out of commission while they were doing the work. Other than seeing the scaffolding and some high white fences, it didn't really deter from the resort at all.

DisOhana, the biggest problem for us, was that just a month before our trip, I figured out on my own that the main building was going to be closed for refurb while we were going to be there. We received no phone call, no other options, we were rather unceremoniously shuffled into Sugar Loaf. Since then, it seems like Disney has changed their ways in how they notify people about refurbs. I haven't seen an official listing of dates and buildings yet, but hopefully it will stay on track and they'll be finishing up when you arrive.

That's horrible, Tammi. Did they at least give you a discount on the room? The family left deciding on the resort up to me, this is our first trip to WDW and I want it to be perfect!
On our last trip to Disneyland we stayed at the Grand Californian. There was painting going on right outside our balcony for the weekend we were there. We weren't told it was going to happen - we found out through a note they left in our room for us. We were not able to have the curtains open during the day because there were workmen on scaffolds right off our balcony and they stored all the equipment on the grounds right below us.
The one request DH had was that I be sure there would be no construction going on at the resort we stayed at. It sounds like they'd do a better job of keeping it away from the guests than the GC did...but still, it would be nice to know of it in advance.

Dis Ohana - I'll be at the GF in late Nov./early Dec, too, in RPC. I would be absolutely shocked if the Main Bldg. isn't redone before then, given all the traffic it sees during the holiday periods. According to a source in IPO, RPC is currently slated to be done sometime this summer (which is value season for the deluxes, and not as crowded as some of the other times).

Here's my post on the GF thread re: the refurb: http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=18485638&postcount=4318

I'm hoping to get more info. soon. :goodvibes

Tinkaroo: Do you know what the schedule is for Boca Chica? That is the building we have requested for our Dec. trip. We will be there Dec. 7th thru the 15th and have a Lagoon View booked. TIA.

All subject to change but they are to begin next week and "should" be finished in December if things go as planned.

They will close buildings or entire floors, so other than possibly seeing some workmen come and go you should not be bothered.

Since this is an interior redo, there should be no visible construction from the outside of the building.

I don't know the schedule for each building.

Thanks to you all. DisOhana we have booked a lagoon view room but our UK tour operators don't tell us which buildings we are in so I've no idea, will post and let you know what they are doing after we have been in November if that helps.

It looks like I'll be missing the construction for the main building, what a relief! Have a wonderful trip everyone!
