How Disney Should Market DVC.

There are some great posts on the DVC forum about what points are worth and how to do the calculations, etc. I don't rent points, but it is nice to see what any given stay is actually costing you if you like that sort of thing.

I do think Disney would be better off using this type of math to sell their timeshare direct rather than talking about breakeven year and other mumbo-jumbo. The reality is I would NEVER spend $400+/night to stay at Beach Club or any other Disney resort if I was paying cash. We always stayed at moderates and got huge discounts on packages like free dinning or discounted park tickets.

Using the math talked about on the forum (see original post by JimMIA). I can stay in a 1-BR at Beach Club for about $1,500 or about $250/night (6 night stay for those no paying attention or too busy to do the math and I figured about 198 points for off-peak). Not bad for really nice accomodations.

However, being in sales & marketing my entire career - DVC is not a financial but an emotional decision. It's the dream of having a magical experience from the first "Welcome Home". We own 200 at SSR and 200 at BCV. We are VERY new members and WE LOVE IT! It is a completely different Disney experience in my opinion.

If someone asks me about it I simply say...

1) If you like luxury acommodations DVC is for you.
2) If you go to Disney at least 1-2 X per year DVC is for you.
3) If you like to plan your trips way in advance DVC is for you.

Forget the math and have a great time! I also like not getting a bill at check out (other than the grand I drop in the parks and on meals - those magaritas in Mexico really add up too!).

Now if DVC only had discounts on airfare!

this is a great post. it's true, we didn't buy this thinking it was an investment. i think that's why we couldn't wrap our minds around that selling points when we were at the sales pitch with our guide. when he tried to talk about when we'd break even and things like that we just sort of glazed over.

really, DVC for us is that one luxury item that we have and love. some people buy boats, some nicer cars, etc. seems like everyone has that one thing that they spend money on. for us, its Disney vacations.

we would never spend cash to stay at a deluxe resort. but now that we are DVC we can. and after last week's stay at the treehouse villas, it solidified the fact that DVC is great for us!!

like they say at welcome home wednesdays, "dvc is you and me!" woot!

i love dvc! :yay:

Yeah- the margaritas and the viking coffees. I could have one of those in the dead of august!

People never believe us when I say a trip to Disney is the cheapest trip I can take. You are going to Disney again? Food and liquor plus an annual pass every year. Pretty cheap for that much magic! :wizard:

exactly! Love dvc!!!

Nice post....I have played with the numbers too. Ended up throwing it all out and looking at pictures of past visits and planning future visits and (just like you) realized.... You can't find a formula that quantifies the memories made and new ones to come.
