How Disney ruined my vacations for life: A cautionary tale

Well, since the thrust of the post was: "The Poly is the best place for my family", let's take a look at times when a family might realistically go.

Columbus Day weekend and surrounding days-$539
Thanksgiving (limited days available)-$746
Week between Christmas and New Years-$676
February Break-$599
April Break-$542

There are a lot of variables involved in times that a family can go. Some lucky families can go whenever they want to. Disney knows when lots of families can go and prices accordingly. That's why my family always goes during downtimes...well, that and the "lighter" crowds.

Sure. But there are 365 days in the year. A room at the Poly is going to cost more than $500 on well over half of those days. One cannot use an outlier price to establish what a room there costs. And that goes for both ends of the spectrum. If someone asks me what a room at the Poly goes for, I tell them, on average, $500-$550. I think that is a fair estimate.

I love Disney. Growing up, my parents weren't much of travelers. Our trips were always within a car ride away from NY (Niagara Falls, Poconos, Virginia Beach, New Hampshire, etc.) Our big trip would be every 2-4 years - when we'd go to Disney. My dad would wake us up at 3 or 4 in the morning and we'd pack in the car to beat the NY rush hour. He'd drive 21, sometimes 18-20 hours to get us down to Disney. In the past few years, my sister and I have been able to turn my parents onto flying - but there's still something special and nostalgic about hopping in the car and driving: eatin on the road, stopping at South of the Border, literally racing through Georgia...

Anyway, my dad got sick back in 2007 and after recovering, he wanted to try Disney for Christmas, so we did. We loved it so much that we've gone back every year but 2011. We love the planning that goes into it, and despite the crowds, we're yet to have a bad vacation. During our first Christmas trip, we mentioned that it was my dad's first trip post-cancer. They gave him a little cake at a few restaurants to celebrate. In 2013 my house was flooded during Sandy. After ripping up floors and basically putting most of our belongings on the curb, we thought we'd have to cancel our trip. After our family insisted it'd be good for us, we decided to still go. I emailed Disney to let them know we'd be celebrating "surviving Sandy." I didn't expect much - maybe a cake. Well, our first night there (Christmas Eve) we get a call that we have a package waiting at the front desk. I completely forgot that I told Disney. My sister is a teacher, so we assumed that maybe her class sent her something. When we got to the desk, we were given a big red Mickey-looking bag with our last name on it. It was PACKED with goodies - Chip & Dale Pretzels, candy, rice krispie treats, even a cooler at the bottom filled with water, lemonade and coke products. We estimated the bag (after looking into things) at around $150. The bag was from "our friends at the Disney Reservation Center." Such a nice gesture that really sat well with us. It's THAT type of treatment that puts Disney above all. We've had our problems and our share of rude CMs, but it's something like giving a gift bag to us that keeps us coming back.

We may pull back from our annual trip soon, but not due to Disney. You see, while my dad is retired, my mom has the time off and my sister is a teacher, I only get 15 days off. At 5 days spent at Disney, it limits what I could see and do elsewhere. I LOVE Disney, but I'd also like to travel the world and have Disney ruin other destinations (like OP said.) I think going once every other year or less time during Xmas could be good for me and my family.

Same thing has happened to us...

We try to do other vacations in between Disney trips and it's just not the same...

We now have been adding days on out Disney trips to do other things and it has worked great. Also adding stops "on the way" to do other things.

Honestly our Disney trips have not gotten mundane because there are always new things we want to do... new places to eat, new places to stay, new shows to see. We have always been Amusement Park people but since we have started visiting WDW it has ruined a lot of other places for us...

I can agree with that.
But this:

And finally, the Poly for $300?? 2005 called. It wants its rate structure back.

was the issue that some had.

Surely you will conceed that the expedia quote I got for the fall of 2015 is not 2005...correct? So just because it isn't the average or what people pay during peak times now, it's also not impossible in 2015. So I don't need Doc Brown's time machine to pay $300 for a night at the poly.

Perhaps not. But you needed exceptional timing. The number of days that that rate is available, and the number of rooms that they allocate to that rate is incredibly small. I remember checking in at the YC one time with a really great rate, and when I checked in, the person behind the desk commented: "Whoa! That's an amazing rate. Do you have a relative who works here?!" But I would never represent to anyone that they could replicate that. I know I have never been able to.

Due to several factors, I don't get to go on real vacations much at all. I'm thrilled if I get to go to a multi-day workshop a couple of hours away and stay in a hotel! I got to go to southern Texas on a work-related trip a couple of years ago and just LOVED getting the chance to fly, be in airports, stay in a cool hotel, and eat out! It was great! That's how deprived I am.
When my mother and I started discussing her upcoming retirement (she's 72 and refuses to retire, says "two more years"), she mentioned she wanted to go on a nice vacation once before she retired. At first we toyed with our dream of going overseas, but when I started pricing trips and considering all that it would entail, I said, "You know, we could do Disney a lot cheaper." There was no further talk of anything else. Our last trip to Disney was almost 17 years ago, and we LOVED it. To us, going to WDW and staying on property is the epitome of a vacation. We like the complete escape from the real world. And as adults without children in tow, we find that we can make Disney as relaxing or exciting as we want.
My first trip to Disney as a 4yo kid is one of my earliest memories. I went twice more as a child, and so I think the word "vacation" is synonymous with "Disney" to me. It's the combo of familiar nostalgia and an experience unlike any other.
Sometimes I wish I could travel more, and I will eventually when life permits me to do so. And much of that traveling may be to Disney, though I love other destinations as well. I often envy those who get to hit WDW every year, but another part of me also wonders if I'd get tired of it? I would hate to become so familiar with it that it becomes routine. That said, I'm already thinking about a return visit after our trip in March. My parents are getting older, I'm not sure how long they will feel like going, but I wouldn't mind a solo trip. I really want to stay at a deluxe resort one of these days.

All I know is, when we left WDW property that last trip so many years ago, I was heartbroken. I remember noticing the moment we left the property how dirty and grungy and...unmagical...Orlando looked. There is no place like Disney.

My problem is that I love two separate places and I want to see the world. I don't have the time or money to do it all so I have to prioritize. So far the world is taking the hit.

Yeah, I'm probably ruined and my poor hubby, bless his heart, he just goes along with it! We do other things, and to say that if you do enough other things besides Disney and your travel is broad enough then you won't be ruined has absolutely nothing to do with it. You either have that Disney bug or you don't.

But I do. :wizard: I think I could go every year or twice and not get sick of it. Of course I'd still want to do other things, but I don't think I'd ever just just say 'nah' to a trip. Isn't going to happen. We have been to Washington D.C., London, Paris, NYC, the mountains, not to mention the beach almost every year. But in my heart there is nothing like Disney. It just doesn't compare to me, even if I do think those other places are wonderful.
