We are spending this weekend in a cabin at Ft. Wilderness-my parents will be with us and one has difficulty walking long distances (nerve damage) and the other is on oxygen. We'll be driving so we have our car with us. Is it better to just plan on driving our own car to the parks? Also, if we have a cabin that's further away from the outpost and activities could we drive to them?

Thanks everyone!

You can drive to the out post or take the bus. The only bus that does not leave from the out post is the Magic Kingdom. You may definitely want to plan on driving there. It's a nice boat ride to the Magic Kingdom but it is a walk from were the bus drops you off to the boat. The other park you can catch a bus at the OP

If you're talking about driving to activities within the Fort, then No. There is no parking except at your site and near the Outpost, except for 15 minute parking outside the Meadows Trading Post. But the internal bus system works well, running every few minutes. You might also want to consider a golf cart for in-Fort activities.

you should be just fine take the bus system anywhere you might have to exit and board several buses! If you need assistance just let them know the are very accomidating

Welcome to the boards Moxie,,
sounds like you'll just need to take your time,
enjoy ya'll's trip.

thanks everyone :) the last time we were at Ft Wilderness was 1974 when my parents were younger than I am now-so this is a real trip down memory lane for us!

Wow,,this is gonna be awesome for ya'll,,since 1974 !!!
Disney has expanded like, like, TONS since 1974 !! Ya'll are gonna have absolutely the bestest of time , :thumbsup2

We've been several times since then, Frank. :) We live about 2 hours away and go just about every other month or so-this is the first time we've stayed in Ft Wilderness since then.

I'd really recommend a golf cart to get around the Fort for anyone having mobility issues. Would make it infinitly easier, and a whole lot of fun too!:cool1:

If you haven't already, you should put a request on your reservation to get a cabin close to the bus line. The walk from your door to a bus stop can be a real back breaker at the end of the day. The loops are pretty long, so it makes a big difference where you are located.
And I agree on the golf cart! Might just make the trip for you.

Oh,,okay. Well then , you see that I'm right, Disney has expanded TONS since 1974, aint that right?..:rotfl2:

Enjoy the Fort !

I second the golf cart. If you have trouble walking and can afford a cart. That is the best way to go. We have our own cart and they can be so much fun just looping around.

If you get a cart look up Kenny his cart are very reasonable.

If one of your parents have a handicap parking permit, take your vehicle to Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom. Disney provides excellent parking for their handicapped guests. The handicapped parking area at Hollywood Studios is the best and you can park closer to the entrance than if you were to ride some buses.
