I shipped my wedding dress, and it was one of the best decisions I made. It was SO nice not to have to lug it around, beg for space in the captain's closet or worry about it getting mushed in an overhead bin.
I took mine in a special box (acid free, white, etc.) for mine to take on the plane and had it steamed when we got to WDW.
The funny part was that it originated in the states as my husband ordered it for me in his super secret surprise that didn't go to plan and then it went back! It fit in the overhead bin just fine -- but it was on a 747 which could make a huge difference.
I have also heard of some women getting a cheap extra seat just for the dress too!

I purchased a wedding gown preservation box from foster-stephens.com. It cost $46.00 with shipping and came with tissue paper and tape and instructions. I actually watched an online video on how to pack your wedding dress and followed the instructions the night before our flight left. I unpacked it as soon as we checked into our room and you couldn't even tell it had been packed! I thought about shipping it ahead to the resort also but was afraid something might happen to it. This way...I had it with me all the time. The box easily fit in the overhead storage bin of the airplane and I just carried it on.
I picked a lace dress so that it wouldn't show wrinkles, then I just put it in a garment bag (bustled), folded it in half, and put it in one of our huge suitcases. I realize this makes me totally weird! But it turned out great and wasn't wrinkled, didn't even require a press! My veil was slightly crumpled but I left it hanging in the bathroom when I took a hot shower and the steam fixed it.
I opted to carry it on with me in a David's Bridal dress bag. I had Carolyn Allen's booked to steam the dress so I wasn't too concerned with wrinkling. It actually worked out great...the pilot actually suggested that I wait till the overhead bin was full so I could lay the dress on top (we flew Southwest so there were no closets). When we got there I was pleasantly surprised that the dress survived and didn't need steaming.
The only downside to carrying it on was going through the airport carrying it so it didn't drag...it was heavy after a while!!!!
Having the dress with me at all times made me more at ease...shipping or packing the dress in checked luggage would've freaked me out.
Yup, that's me! I was a little insane leading up to the wedding... but it was worth it (to me) for piece of mind. They didn't give the dress any pretzels though.

Jackie -- seriously?? I'd be making some serious complaints for that, after all the dress paid the fare, she should've gotten the same treatment as everyone else on the flight!

On e-bay, there are many companies which sell (quite cheaply) boxes which are the same dimensions as the maximum allowed for cabin baggage. I purchased one of these, had my dress boutique pack my dress into it and carried it with me as hand-luggage!!! It never went out of my sight for a moment!! It never saw the light of day from the moment the girls in the shop packed it into it's box, until we unpacked at the resort!!! I had it steamed in our room, the day before my VR. It worked really well for me!!
