Brye got home from a military deployment on the Thursday of the Memorial Day weekend. We headed to the Midwest to see his family, drove his car back to Norfolk, and then headed down to the World for a visit.
On the Thursday night, he told me that he had a day planned for the Friday and asked me to leave the room so he could pack my day.
Ok? I thought. He told me to shave my legs the night before, too. Thank goodness for that warning. That morning, I put on my specified clothes- no descript shorts and a T-shirt. We had breakfast with my mom at CBR where we were staying and hopped in the car. He pulls out a blindfold. And I was expected to wear it. He did a few left turns to throw me off and off we went.
When I was finally told I was allowed to take my blinfold off, we were at Discovery Cove! I had always wanted to go and it was a nice surprise to say the least. We checked in and the lady at the desk mentioned something about going to the bathroom. Of course I went. I didn't know it, but he handed the ring off to her.
We went to the cabana at our orientation time, and at the end of the dolphin interaction, the trainer said, "To reward the dolphins for their good behavior, we do two things- we either feed them or we play with them. Since we've been feeding them this whole time, what do you guys think about playing fetch with her for a few minutes?" Everyone was excited. He asked for a volunteer and I immediately raised my hand. He pulled me out in front of everyone (much to the grumbling of the parents with young children). He gave me the signal to give her and she came rip roaring to the front of the encounter tank. He told me to lay my arms out straight and that she would roll the buoy right to me. Well, she began rolling that buoy and I noticed writing on it. It read,
Jill, let's chase our dreams together. I love you. Will you marry me?
Through the tears, I managed to squeak out, "Yes, but now you're stuck with me." He didn't say a word and just smiled. The whole thing was on camera and on film and it's hilarous to watch me try to crack a smile for the photographers saying, "Can you smile? Please smile! No, don't cry!"
You can't bring the rings into the tank for obvious reasons. When we emerged from the water after the encounter, a staff member- little did I know it was the girl he'd been in touch with from the Event Planning all along- met us and presented me with a coupon for our free video and photos. What I didn't notce was that she kept one hand behind her back. That had the ring box. Brye reached around and got it from her. He disappeared out of my peripheral vision, and when I turned around, he was on bended knee in the sand. He asked, "Now, will you marry me? It wasn't official until I was on one knee." I burst into tears again and got on my knees in the sand with him.
We spent the rest of the day in our fabulous little cabana- which I had actually been eyeing from the water becuase it was right on the encounter tank and had a bottle of champagne and roses in it! I wanted
that treatment...whatever it was

When we got back to Disney, we headed straight to the Wedding Pavilion. I had never stepped foot inside it until that day. There was no question in my mind, even beforehand, that was where we'd be getting married. For dinner, we went to Narcoossee's and called everyone we knew to tell them our wedding date- December 29, 2005, exactly five years from the day and place we met.
Of course, the whole thing is on tape and I am teased mercilessly that I couldn't hold it together.....
