How did you prevent sunburn???

...and reapply constantly!

Our 1st cruise, we did this (every 15-20 minutes!), only stayed on the beach for 2.5 hours 9-11:30, & still burnt like lobsters.

Our 2nd cruise, Land's End saved us & my boys willingness to wear their hats more. My oldest breaks out from sunscreen...fun eh...NOT! The only one he can use that doesn't give him major rashes is the Neutrogena Sensitive Skin. My son is the only one I know who could get 2nd degree sunburn on a sunny February day in Chicago!

We also washed Rit Sun Guard into clothes, but the Land's End clothes worked the best, as we didn't have to keep reapplying everywhere. We can burn through white t-shirts. We bought rash guards shirts, trunks, t-shirts, & shorts. They have adult & kid SPF clothes. Sears also carries them sometimes.

You're using good products that keep out the UVB rays thus you don't burn but you really want stuff that blocks UVA too. We use Neutrogena Sensitive Skin SPF 30 because it has titanium dioxide (less irritating to most). We also use Banana Boat Kids Quick Block (avobenzone) or Ombrelle (harder to find). There is a new Coppertone 50 that says right on the front of the bottle that it contains avobenzone. I hear great things about Blue Lizard (titanium and zinc) but have a hard time finding it here.

Remember - any time your skin is "tanned" it is damaged and skin damage over time can lead to skin cancer...and skin cancer ain't pretty. Hate to be a downer - I'm a reformed sun worshipper! Don't even get me started on tanning beds!!!

Here is an interetsing link to some of the higher rated sunscreens. Read those labels!:cool2:

Interesting. I have a bottle of "No Ad" SPF 45, "Coppertone" SPF 45 and "Sea and Ski" SPF 45......those ingredients are not in any of them. I'll have to look at other brands at the store, what brand has those ingredients?
I usually buy the cheapest SPF 45 I can find.......and with frequent applications never burn. Of course, they say SPF's above 30 really don't make much difference.

There aren't a lot of them right now that have those, but they are definitely highly recommended if you are in high UV sun. As my wife mentioned, Blue Lizard is one brand that has both titanium and zinc. It makes for a thicker sunscreen, but I applied once and was in the sun on Castaway Cay during a 10+ day for 6 hours and did not even get tanned.

Go to a site like drugstore.com and search around for sunscreens. they list all of the ingredients for them so it is easy to find one you like and then pick it up locally (if you don't want to order online). Blue Lizard isn't carried in stores much so we usually order it online.

Thank you for all this info.I have been using the wrong stuff .My DD(7)
was just dignosed with a pre -melonoma last most. She had a mole on her upper leg/butt that was removed. This was not in a "exposed" area and she is fine now but must have frequent skin checks and sunscreen at all times.I even am having her get it before recess at school

I have lived in South Florida all of my life. Obviously, sunblock is a must. (remember spots like ears, head, and the top of your feet.)
The last few years, my sons have been wearing sun shirts. They're very in style so they don't mind and they are great. Old Navy sells them for about $12 and now have them for girls as well as boys. A must if you're planning on spending more than a couple of hours in the sun.
