How did you know you had Pneumonia?

I've never had pneumonia, but I had the worse case of bronchitus/coughing ever last year. I was coughing 24/7 and I actually ended up bruising my ribs because of the excessive coughing. It was so, so painful. It took the best part of 6 mths to heal.

Hope you feel better soon.

Boy, I wish there was some way I could come watch your kids for you! I hope you feel better. My little Andy ,9 months old, has been on antibiotics and breathing treatments 3 times a day for a week. They werent sure if it was pneumonia or touch of RSV or just bronchitis, but let me tell ya, after 24 hours of the meds, he was his old self!
Prayers that you have a restful night! My door in PA is always opened if you need to send the kids here!

When I had pneumonia I had very little coughing, just a little cold. But I felt like when I breathed I wan't getting any air. And it was June and about 90 degrees and I was shivering. I ached all over. I had shortness of breath too. But once I got on an antibiotic I felt better almost right away. But I wasn't myself for awhile after.

Add me to those that are saying don't fool around with this. When my DD8 was one week old, I got sick, coughing and fever. On the day she was exactly 2 weeks old, I was admitted to the hospital. That was a Friday. By Monday morning, I had respiratory failure, was in ICU, on a ventilator. My family was told to come and bring clothes for my funeral. I had pneumococcal pneumonia that progressed extremely quickly. The problem is there are several different types of pneumonia, and you could have one of the really bad ones, like I did. The kind that I had was what killed Jim Henson (muppet guy). Don't fool around with this please.

i had it a month ago and it was the worst thing Ive ever had. It basically just started and got worse..no cold or anything beforehand. I'm student teaching and I went home on a Monday and felt tired and a lil under the weather, by that nite my fever was up to 102 by morning it was up to 103 and i could not breathe and couldnt stop coughing so i went to the dr by thursday and just by listening to me he could tell it was pneumonia and then i had to go to the hospital for a chest xray..and i felt like death just sitting there waiting to have pictures taken of what i already knew lol. it took me 2 weeks to fully recover and I just got rechecked on Thursday and I'm in the clear, they did schedule for me to go back in Dec to get a pneumonia shot cuz once u get it you can get it again and i dont ever want it again!

I had it a few years ago when I was home from college during summer break. The only way they knew it was from the x-ray.

I started out with a cold and pink eye around the 4th of July. I went to the eye Dr. for the pink eye and went to an urgent care facility for the cough and just got some prescription strength cough medicine.

About two weeks later I was still coughing and feeling crappy. I remember when I went to work I'd park less than a block from my building and would sweat and get out of breath just walking from the car to the door. I kept think "Wow, I'm sooo out of shape. What's wrong with me?" (At this point my grandmother was already saying "what if it's pneumonia" but I figured, you know how grandmother's are. They make a big deal about any cough or sniffle. :rolleyes1)

I actually only went back to the Dr. because my job involved doing an oral history project and I was interviewing people on tape. You pretty much couldn't hear the people respond to my questions because I was coughing so much. So probably about 3 weeks after I first got sick I went back to my primary care office, was still coughing like crazy and had a fever. The doctor listened to my chest and I was sure he'd say it was bronchitis at the very least, but instead he said it was just a lingering cold. He gave me yet another cough medicine.

I went home and told my mother and she just said, "Your grandmother is right. It's not a cold. You need a chest x-ray. We're going back tomorrow and I'm demanding you get one." So we called the next morning and told the nurse our concern and they agreed to the x-ray (though, still insisted that it really wasn't necessary). There was actually a radiology dept in the same building as the primary care office so we went there and then waited in the primary care waiting room for the results. Well lo and behold the Dr. (the one who'd listened to my chest not even 24 hours earlier) rushed out into the waiting room and hurried us back into a room where he announced in a shocked voice "You have pneumonia."

So don't be shy about asking firmly for an x-ray.

I had "walking" pneumonia this past January and while I knew I was sick I was suprised I didn't feel worse...I guess that is the "walking" part. I wish I had started getting treatment sooner because shortly after I was diagnosed I coughed so hard I broke my rib. Ouch! I don't ever want a repeat of that. If you suspect at all that you have pneumonia please go to the doctor.

Ditto this. I had it in July of this year. :confused3 I've felt much worse from bronchitis or just bad asthma attacks than when I had pneumonia, so there's no telling.

I am home with the 2 kids, and my DH is working until 10:30. In all honesty, there is nobody to watch them. My Mom is away, as is FIL.. The idea of going there with them is  ..

I work for myself, and have tomorrow as my deadline. I may not stay all day, but will go in at least the AM, then if I feel the same way, I will go the ER...
------------------------------

Could you at least try not to sleep with a cough drop in your mouth? Maybe a bottle of water by your bed instead? Put one in the freezer now, and then take it out just before you go to bed so it will stay relatively cold..

That cough drop thing really scares me!

I have had pneumonia twice and its not fun! I remember that deep, deep cough and shortness of breath. I also remember a bad backache and of course a fever. My cough was non-productive but it was a horrible cough. It took about three courses of antibiotics and alot of Tylenol w/ codeine to get rid of it. Best wishes and tons of Pixie Dust.

Ok i will do this.. Thanks

Off to do it now, and then make DH some supper..

Thanks all.

They didn't want to believe I had it at the first hospital I went to. I had a bronchitis-ish cough then, and they gave me a couple of breathing treatments and promptly sent me on my way because they allegedly didn't see anything significant on the x-ray. The next night while attempting to sleep sitting up, I was having a very hard time breathing. I went down a flight of stairs to sit in the recliner, and even that took considerable effort. My husband (who was my fiance then) is an EMT/Firefighter, and when he took my blood pressure it was practically nil. He made the call to 911. I've never seen him as pale and scared as he was back then - and that day he had a job interview!

The ambulance took me to a different hospital and they finally diagnosed me with pneumonia. They said it was so bad I was lucky I didn't have a collapsed lung!

My father had it last winter. He had a cough for months that he ignored and he wound up with pneumonia, collapsed lung, pulmonary embolism - the whole 9. He spent 19 days on a ventilator in a sleep induced coma. This year he's more careful with his health.

Please get yourself checked as soon as possible.
