We are staying at WDW and do want to visit Universal Studios for a day, but we are not renting a car. What's the best and most affordable way to get over there?

The fastest way is by taxi. It will run you probably around $35.00-$40.00 each way. There is a way to get there using the Lynx bus system but it is so complicated and takes so long that is really not worth it. You should look into renting a car if you want to save some money. An economy car will probably run you no more than $35.00 a day in Orlando.

Mears Transportation runs a shuttle. I think it costs about $14 round trip per person. You should be able to arrange for it at your hotel.

I would go with a car service. I think Sunray will do it for $55 round trip. www.sunraytransportation.com. You can come and go when you want. Have them drop you off at the Hard Rock Hotel. This will give you the shortest walk to the park.

BTW--that is how I got from UO to Pop Century when I checked in over there. One way fare was $30--he even through in a grocery stop so I could restock my bottled water and fresh fruit!

We are going to US/IOA for two days during our upcomming WDW trip. We choose to rent a car for the two days. There is a National rental car located at the Dolphin Resort so we will take a taxi over in the morning (opens at 8am) and go from there to US/IOA. The next day when we are done at US/IOA we will bring the car back and use Disney transportation to get back to PoP where we are staying. The two day rental is costing us about $100 and we use a coupon from the entertainment book for a free upgrade. I just find it easier and no more expensive then the other choices. Hope it helped. Good Luck!

We just came back last night from a great stay at the Royal Pacific! We (5 people) used Sunray from MCO to RPR. Bob was fantastic. He was waiting for us when our plane landed 15 min early. He hung around graciously while it took forever for our luggage to arrive. He helped us with our bags, and brought a very clean SUV (Suburban, I think) to bring us to RPR. He was very friendly and prompt. We paid $82 round trip cash plus a one way tip when we arrived at RPR. His partner Roger picked us up at RPR at exactly the arranged time in an even newer SUV. (4:15 for a 6:15 flight). He was also friendly and engaging and we tipped him when we got to MCO.

I will definately use Sunray again. They were great. Sorry, I don't remember the pricing for WDW to US/IOA but Roger mentioned the price to me on the ride back to MCO. I will be using them for our trip to WDW in January. (even though I didn't originally budget to use a car service to WDW)

Have a great time!

:sunny: If I am not being too nosey, how much did you tip?We are also considering using this company at the end of aug. They e-mailed me a quote of $90.00 round trip.Just curious about tip.Did you do the grocery stop? :surfweb:

We did not do the grocery stop. We stayed Club Level at RPR and didn't load up the room with snacks. I tipped Bob $15 for the ride to RPR. He had to wait around for our luggage for quite awhile with us. I also had to round up a stray 14yo son who had to eat something before he died of starvation.... While talking to him, he mentioned we were his last trip of the day and he was heading on vacation himself the next day to Indiana. I think I was going to tip $10 originally. (Bob also asked, as I paid him in full for the round trip, to pay gratuities each way as there might be a different driver for the return trip) In our case he knew he wouldn't be taking us back, of course.

I tipped Roger $12 on the way back, only because I didn't think ahead and have a $5 bill on me.

This was the first time we have ever used a car service to WDW or US/IOA and I couldn't have been more pleased. The money felt well spent.

After reading about the $12+/day parking and the hassle of getting a rental car overall (sometimes), I will probably never rent again.

i have done taxis, rental car and town service.
for day trips, used the mear shuttle.

depending on how many people you have in your group, can help you make a decision on how to travel.

for my fall trip i am doing a 3 leg trip.

mco to wdw
wdw to rph
rph to mco

using sunray at a total cost of $112 complete.
using a coupon for $8 off. would have been $120 but with discount, it is 112.

if you travel by taxi, go when it is not rush hour. time in the cab adds on to the fare

wow, that's awesome to know! thanks so much for that info! do you just ask the front desk to call for the shuttle? will they know what i'm talking about if i ask for it? haha. i don't want them to give me a weird look when i ask... :rotfl:

I went to http://www.mearstransportation.com/pdf/rates2006.pdf to check for prices and it's $15 from WDW hotels to US.
When I called they said pick up is from approx 8 am and then the latest bus from US is 2:30am. Not sure where they pick up at US tho.
I'm thinking of using them also, since there will only be the 2 of us. Doesn't seem to worth the extra cost and do limo service.
