How did you get to school? (inspired by drop off thread)

I lived two blocks from my Catholic grammar school and walked, even in kindergarten.

Junior and senior high I took the bus. I wasn’t lucky enough to win the parking permit lottery for HS seniors to drive.

K through 6th walked. K-3 was across the street from our house. 4-6 was a little further away. 7th bus, 8th either my mom drove me or bus to school, bus home. 9-11 bus. 12th I drove.

K-6 walked - 4 times per day as we went home for lunch. To get a bus, you needed to be over 1 mile from school and with all the neighborhood schools, very few were bussed.

Jr High (7,8,9) walked but twice per day as we had lunch in school. Once again, needed to be over 1 mile to get bussed. We had 2 jr. Highs so not a lot of bussing.

High School (10th, 11th, 12th) walked as you had to be over 2 miles for the bus. I was 1 9/10 miles.

As for my DS, he was bussed all of his school years. Very, very few walkers.

I walked or rode my bike until I had a car and drove. In the city where I went to school students were only bussed if over one mile in elementary school, over one and half miles for jr high school, and over two miles for high school. We always lived just on the edge of the bus distance. My parents only had one car so unless my mom took my dad to work at 4am there was no car available for dropping me off.

My kids rode the bus until they were old enough to drive or lucky enough to make friends with someone who was driving. Different area and different rules. Where I live now the county provides bus transportation as long as you are more than two tenths of a mile from school or on the opposite side of the road but still within the two tenths.

There are so many more parents who drop/pick up their kids from school since Covid. It was always smart to avoid traveling past the schools by me in the mornings and afternoons but even more so now. So many parents lineup to pick up their kids that the line backs up onto the main highway in front of the schools totally blocking the road from about 3:15-3:30 almost every day.

Elementary: my dad drove me.
Middle School: most kids took the train. I went to an arts school where kids from all over the county attended.
High School: 2 years on the train, the other 2 years my mom.

(My town had three schools: a K-3, a 4-6, and a 7-12. The primary and jr/sr high school were very near each other, the elementary was in a different location.)

Primary - walked. It was really close to my house.

Elementary - We had moved, so I also walked, though a little bit farther. My younger brother walked with me and then was bussed to the primary school, and the opposite on the way home. (There were always a bunch of us hanging around - unsupervised, after school, waiting for our younger siblings. It would never be allowed today.)

Jr. High./High School - started earlier, so Dad dropped me off on his way to work. I walked home.

In elementary and junior high, I either walked or rode a bike. In high school, I took two city buses.

I went to several schools over the years. Even from the first grade I would either be dropped off early by my parents or I would take public transportation by myself. Even at age 6 it wasn't considered that big a deal. I knew how to drop a quarter in the fare box and where to get off. I ended up taking the bus to/from school during junior high. In high school it was a bit different. I'd be dropped off but occasionally if that wasn't practical I might walk 1.5 miles. There was no convenient bus route from our home to the school. Some of my fellow students had driver licenses and their parents provided a car, and something I'd be offered a ride home. I'm thinking that's not legal now under current rules on provisional driver licenses - at least not without an adult in the car.

These days my kid would always be dropped off at school. I think my kid is mature enough to take a bus alone, but my wife won't allow it.

I lived with my parents going to college. I had a parking pass most years, but one year I went with a limited pass (cost less but gave me limited numbers of days to park) and actually rode my bike most days. I could also take the bus.
