How did you come up with your pet's name?

Except for my first dog when I was in high school all mine came named already. Either by the adoption agency or by the trainer. :scratchin

Molly (French Bulldog) Wanted to name her Maggie but turned into Molly.
Pixie (1st Mainecoon) Named after Tinkerbell
Mowgli (2nd Mainecoon) Named after Jungle Book. (Fits him great. He's 10 months weighs 12 lbs and is 39". He's our man cub.
Darby (3rd Mainecoon) Named after Darby from Tigger & Pooh.

We wanted all Disney names but went with a different name with the dog.

My boxer Zuzu's name comes from It's a Wonderful Life.
My mix is Harleigh because she is the only Harley DH is going to get.
My angel rottie's name was Elmer after Elmer Fudd.
I've already picked the next dog's name. It will be Mistress Blooregard. Miss Bloo for short. After Bloo from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.

When I was young our family Cairn Terrier was named after Grace Kelly. We were watching High Noon while we were trying to think of a name and so she became Kelly.

In my house all of our pets have been rescues and were pre-named:

DH rescued a 1 year old female of extremely mixed birth - she was pregnant and tied up on a 6ft lead in a truck yard in the middle of summer with no water and half starved. He took her and the owner is lucky DH didn't do what he was thinking of doing. She came named Atreyu from Neverending Story but we shortened it to Trey. She had 5 puppies 4 days later. We managed to adopt out 3 of the puppies but unfortunately had to give up the mom and 2 pups because we weren't really allowed to have dogs where we lived.

Then several years later when we got out own house we got Luke, a Border Collie/Cattle Dog X. He died of poisoning. :sad1:

Then we got Zeus - a Roman Rottweiler who had been surrendered to Animal Control (I worked for the town and got to know the dog catcher.) DH called him Goob Naboubious or Gooby dog. He was the sweetest tempered dog you could ever meet. He got old and very arthritic and we had to end his suffering a year and a half ago.

Before Zeus died we got Chopper, a smooth coat Fox Terrier, and the bane of my existence. He was also a surrender to the animal shelter. He is very sweet, but very hyper and ready to GO! all the time. I usually call him Choppy. We've had him for 5 years now.

Then we got a Bouvier who was picked up as a stray. You have never seen a hairier dog than when we brought him home. OMG! The shelter named him Dexter. We tried finding him a name more fitting to his dignified bearing, but they all sounded too contrived. Nothing really stuck so Dexter he remains.

Wow that was a lot longer than I expected. I guess I like talking about my dogs. :goodvibes

Lola was a nickname my college ex gave me. After we broke up, I got my little one and passed on the name to her. She is way better than any guy any day :)

Our cockatiel is Rally, he came with his name. DH acquired him from an ex-neighbor(somewhat of a rescue).

Our Lhasa is Onslow. We adopted him form the shelter but didn't ask for his previous name. Thought he needed a fresh start. So after we met him we were going through names and DH came up with Onslow from Keeping Up Appearances. He's so scruffy and it suits him right down to the ground. His nicknames have nothing to do with his name. When its freezing he's my pupsickle. When we're trying to sleep and he's getting a belly itch on the bed he's thumper. :rotfl: He's the doggie in my flair sig:lovestruc

When DH and I were newlyweds, we got a wonderful kitten. Since he was a shelter cat, and we already had another kitty at home (Samantha, Sammy for short), we got the new kitten checked by our vet before we brought him home. While at the vet, we were asked what his name was. We hadn't come up with anything yet, but didn't want hime to be "No Name", so we came up with Woodrow. Named after the President who has the same last name as ours. We called him Woody, and people would hear "Sammy" and "Woody" and think we had named them after the bartender characters from the at-the-time popular TV show, Cheers. Both Sammy and Woody are gone now, but they were our first loves.

Our current kitties:

-Purrcey, named because he purrs all the time, and for Percy Weasley (we wanted Harry Potter names). His former name was Artemis, but he didn't look like an Artemis at all. He is a big, half flamepoint Siamese, half blonde Tabby fella. He is our Robert Redford lookalike, with golden blonde fur and icy blue eyes (a bit crossed).

-Lily, named for Lily Potter, Harry's late mum from the Harry Potter books. She was a rescue and her former name was Mandy. Didn't fit her personality at all, so we changed it. Lily is a petite flower- she is a beautiful solid Russian Blue gray with golden green eyes.

-GiGi, came with the name from Siamese Rescue. We were going to change it, but she just fits the name so well that we decided to keep it. We did add the middle name Hufflepuff to go with the Harry Potter theme- she is a long haired Siamese (looks like Sassy of Homeward Bound, but no smushed face), and she is very puffy and fluffy!! Also, kinda huffy when she first came. She has really softened up, though, and is now a big sweety.

My daughter did the National tour of the Broadway show "Annie" from 1999-2000. When we came home from the tour we promised her a puppy. She named our 3 lb. yorkie "Bundles" after Bundles the laundry man from the show. His name is Brian and he's still one of our best friends!!!

I have a 70's theme going. My poodle who I lost in November was named Rhoda and when I get a new dog I am going with Cassidy this time!

4 cats;
Skeeter: because as a tiny kitten, she was gray, striped, and clung to me like a mosquito.

Catarina: after Edgar Allen Poe's black cat

Kit Kat: we found her, 2 dd's fell in love with her but the 3rd didn't want her...so we compromised - we kept the kitty, but that 3rd dd got to name her...she named her after her favorite candy bar, which has the word KAT in it, lol.

Slinky Malinky: had seen that name somewhere, and this cat is long, thin, and silvery. Everyone fought me on the name, but now all admit how it suits her.

My shelter cat was already named Guinevere, but I didn't care for the name. Since the first night I had her she wanted to paw in my hair at night. I called her "you goofy Guinevere", and shortened that to GG, then it just morphed to Gigi. Fit her well, she was a pretty Maine Coon. Missing my kitty, lost her to diabetes last year :sad1:, the week after we returned from our WDW trip.

Another cat I had for a while was named Mitchell from the shelter, my cousin had him and called him Baby Kitty because he needed so much attention. When she gave him to me, I finally decided he was Chandler Bing... cute and sweet, but just a bit too needy. :rotfl:

We've given all of our furry family Disney names... except one. One of our yorkies is a rescue. His name is Spike. The others are...

Nala & Boo... both fat cats
Nemo... our other yorkie. His registered name is "Nemo's Wish Upon a Star"

And of course... our yellow lab "Disney". Very sadly, we had to put her down last week because of seizures due to a brain tumor. She was the "bestest" goofy dog we could have ever asked for.

Aww, Philip. So it was a brain tumor after all? (Sorry OT)

eeyore...he was an early christmas present from my brothers gf in high school, and we were hanging ornaments trying to come up with a name for him, and the eeyore ornament came out, and tyler said, "i like that" and he is TOTALLY an eeyore...

relay... there was an auction at my hospital, a woman had donated a puppy (she had a farm and one of her dogs had just had a litter) for a Relay for Life Campaign, and I forwarded the email to my mom saying "I think Eeyore needs a sister..." and my mom, brother, and I all donated $ for her, my dad just had to deal with it... and now they're all best buddys

I have a Great Dane named Ziggy. I named him after the David Bowie song Ziggy Stardust. Ziggy is currently on his back sleeping (and snoring) with all four legs in the air, taking up the majority of my king-sized bed.

When Judy brought home a new (used) cat from the shelter the cat managed to get out of the carrier box in the car. She was able to pull into the garage and close the door with the remote.

When she took the cat into the house and went to show her around the house, she appeared in each room even before Judy got there and Judy had not noticed her passing by.

When Judy called me on the phone, she told me the name she wanted to give the cat. However, I suggested "Pixel" which was the name of the title character in Robert Heinlein's book: The Cat Who Walked Through Walls, and said it was obvious that the cat was walking through walls. So that became her name. (Judy also liked science fiction.)

Magic was named after a pony my sister had when we were growing up called Black Magic - she's black so it seemed to fit. I always call her Miss Magic though because she's a little princess and very proper :snooty:

Hershey was named by me because he's chocolate brown - it's hard to tell in the pic in my signature, but his fur is the exact color of melted milk chocolate. We call him Hershey Bear because he looks like a bear cub.

Cheeto was named by DH because he's orange. I never liked the name but people on here have said it's cute :confused3 Of course, he is more often called "you little ****" because he's a pain in the butt and gets into everything!

We did have a little black hamster called Mickey (after the mouse!) but he passed away early last year :sad1:

Currently, we have 3 kitties and a dog. Since I was born in 1993, we've had 6 kitties and the dog. I'll take care of the sad kitty stories first.

Merryweather. Named after the Sleeping Beauty character. She was a sweet little brown tabby cat. She was my mom's baby. My mom got her as a kitten before she even met my dad. We had to have her put down last year at the old age of 19 :sad1:

Tinkerbell. Another brown tabby. My mom and dad adopted her before I was born. They found her in my aunt and uncle's garage eating dog food. Apparently she got lost and they found the owners but they said they'd already gotten another cat and didn't want her back :sad2: We had her put to sleep when she was 19. I think I was 8 or 9 at the time. She'd had a thyroid disease the last few years of her life and one morning she just couldn't stand up anymore so we had to have her put to sleep :sad1: The exact same thing happened to Merryweather.

Nutmeg. ANOTHER brown tabby. We adopted her a few months after Tinkerbell was put to sleep. That was the name she came with and we liked it. One day a few months after we got her she didn't come home(We live in a quiet neighborhood and most of our kitties go outside) :sad2:

No more sad kitty stories!

After we lost Nutmeg, my mom and I were looking around online at animal shelter websites. We found two siblings, Phillip and Mia. Of course I told my mom we couldn't adopt one without the other :rolleyes1 We kept Mia's named but renamed Phillip. I named him Whiskers. I wasn't very creative at age 9  They're both 7 years old now. Mia used to be really shy but she came out of her shell a LOT when Merryweather died. Merryweather was the boss  Whiskers is a brat and he whines all the time, but he's my baby

When I was 11, my mom's friend called and said "I'm moving into an apartment and they said I can't have a pet so if you don't adopt my cat she has to go to a shelter" That sounds rude but if you know her, it's hilarious :rotfl: So now we have her kitty. Her named was Christy when we got her, but my name is Christine and that would've been confusing. So I re-named her, Coco. She's another brown tabby :upsidedow

And our sweet golden retriever, Daisy! I named her! I'm not sure why I picked the name. I just liked it. We got her as a puppy. She's almost 4 now. My mom spoils her rotten  She's such a sweet dog. She almost never barks and she loves everyone, including our cats!

I have a hairless Chinese crested who hates to wear clothes.

Her name is:

Paris Hairless Hilton
