How did you buy--location, price, or year?

In June 2007, while going to Chef Mickey I was approached by DVC while waiting for my table. I told them that I would only buy if they would build a DVC resort at the Contemporary. I asked them at that time if the construction being built was outside would be a resort but they could not confirm at that time.

Needless to say I finally got my wish come true and became a BLT owner last month. :yay:

I bought my resale for resort first and then price. Use year was important too but only that I didn't want certain UYs while others were OK. There were no extended properties when I bought my resales.

We bought through my sister-in-law, she was a cast member and we got a family discount. We bought at SSR in 2004 and the OKW in 2005. We bought SSR because it was new and payed $70.00/point. OkW on resale at same per point, love the size of OKW rooms.

We bought 250 resale points at SSR ($62 per point with 2 banked, 250 2010 points and 250 coming in 2011). We've seen better deals since we were successful, but we were happy with our purchase. We just passed ROFR and should close in 7-10 days, so we're new at all this. We chose SSR over OKW because the price was almost the same, and we wanted the extra years and slightly lower annual dues. If we purchase additional points, we'll probably choose the same use year. We have only stayed at OKW, and we loved that. SSR was attractive because it's near golf and Downtown Disney. If we purchase additional points we'd probably go for OKW and the lowest price possible. Basically we plan to visit as much as we want in the first 13 months and then see how much more we want to visit.

Good luck with your decision.

We bought BLT because of the location. We love to stay close to MK. And if we don't use up the pointm we can rent out points easily since people want to stay close to MK also.

Bought BLT because:
1) location
2) use year
3) price (as in not a factor)

1) Because while there are numerous resorts we're ok with, we want the proximity to the MK and the significant # of restaurants available at CR and Poly. While we understand we can book anywhere at 7 mos., you just don't know if that may change.

2) We will only buy August use year, but that's because we already had an August use year and didn't want to have multiple use years.

Bought BLT
1) location MK is our favorite and having easy access to all monorail and boat resorts
2) location (oh did I already say that!)
3) Expire date and all 3 DD's grew up at Disney so I am sure at least 1 will use the points in the future

SSR resale
1) THV
2) Price
3) Location to DTD
4) Expire date

VCG
1) talked into it by guide since we did not know enough and was MUCH cheaper then BLT at the time. We use those points for our extra trips to WDW but are planning a trip in 2012 out west so I will be banking and borrowing those points!

Overall happy with our purchases but would not have even considered buying if BLT was not built since we got used to easy access to MK and with teenaged daughters who like to stay at the MK until closing!

We bought BCV for location. We love the resort. Bought it resale for the money savings. The shorter expiration date is not an issue for us.

We bought because of location. It was on Disney property :rotfl:

When we bought there was no choice and I have never regretted it. It does annoy me though all the people going my DVC is better than your DVC, :cheer2: but that is human nature.

If you are the type that covets what other people have the decision is important and almost always wrong. There will always be a better one. Even if they stop building that will probably be true. We will start arguing over whose DVC is aging better.:worship:

I suggest you pick one you like and buy in. When making reservations at 7 months I have at times not gotten the resort I wanted but always got one I enjoyed.

The pickier you are the less choices you have in life.

Wow! Thanks for all the responses. DH and I had a 2 hour in-depth conversation about it last night and we decided there is no way we can book 8-11 months out. We do like the extended expiration years and we also like the price/dues at SSR. While we love the BWV and often travel in Jan or Sep, we would be happy at any of the DVC resorts. We actually like them all! So, we are going to start with a small contract at SSR (once we find one) and build on from there.

Your input really helped us come to that decision...now onto the next new thread for more info from you guys. lol

If you prefer Boardwalk then you should really buy there. It fills up quickly even in the "off season" and your ability to plan further in advance may change. In addition, it looks like you don't have kids (yet?). If you are thinking about having kids then your whole vacation schedule changes. I bought DVC before we had our DD and we had some lovely October and May trips before she went to school. After she started school we are down to Christmas and summer break.

Price was the deciding factor for us. So far we have not had any problems booking a resort other than the ones we own at - AKL and SSR. We love AKL but never want to stay at SSR. We generally use our SSR points for cruises etc.

I say buy where you wouldn't mind staying every trip. We bought into BLT because we knew that we would want to stay there for the majority of our trips (location, location, location). Sure we paid more than had we went with one of the other resorts, but I know that if I'm "forced" to stay at BLT because I can't trade at the 7 month mark, I will be thrilled. Good luck with your decision! :goodvibes

Location, location, location. If it's where you love to stay, buy there:cool1:

Just bought our first contract for 400 points at SSR. Selected that contract because it gave me the lowest annual cost per point out of any of the contracts and I don't have a strong preference where I'm going to stay (happy to be anywhere).

When I looked at the BLT contracts it worked out pretty close to the SSR contract (OKW came out 3rd) over the life of the contract, but the initial buy in price for 400 points at BLT was a too high for me to afford.

We just bought Resale at SSR. It seemed to offer the best initial price, longer contract, and fairly low annual fees. Since we don't really care which resort we're at and want to try them all, this seemed like the best strategy. The new THV's look like a good place to stay as well.

We were in WDW this past Sept and stayed at BLT prior to buying DVC. Loved it, but the pool was loaded with mosquitos. Location is great, rooms were great, but it just seemed sort of "sterile". I wouldn't want to stay there every time. If you have little ones, you can't beat the monorail service and walking distance to MK. Some of the other resorts look like they have some real charm to them, so it was more important to get more "points per dollar" then to get the 11 month advantage at a preferred resort.

If you do love a resort and only want to stay there, definitely buy there.

UY was a non-factor for us initially, however, from what we've read, it's seems like a good idea to match UY's to existing contracts for any new purchases.

I would try to buy at the resort you preferred to stay at. The ability to book eleven months out can be very helpful. I used to book a few months to the seven months out and that its becoming more difficult as time goes on and the membership increases.
You still have great flexibility to stay elsewhere but will not have regrets. If you're very flexible - price would be second with use year a close second if you vacation around the same time every year.
