How did this person on ebay get so many DVC pins??

They're making a killing on ebay selling our commemorative pins at $45 each. I don't understand how the same person got so many pins! They aren't getting any takers, however, on the asking price of $150 for the entire set, card and all.

Two words....mail theft. This is someone who is into Disney, knows the ebay value of these things, and is stealing them from the mail...most likely a postal worker or someone working in a mail room where a lot of this stuff passes through. I'm pretty sure my most recent set is there somewhere....

I wish SOMEONE would investigate. It doesn't seem like it would be difficult to trace this person. Just buy it, and when they accept payment, bust 'em!!!

Shortly after the mailing began, someone reported attending a garage sale in Orlando where they had a basket full of the pins for sale. I have no idea how people got their hands on these pins. I don't think they were stolen from the mail but they may have been taken from the producer factory and/or from Disney storehouses.

I heard this from one of the DVC kiosks in MGM Studios:

He told us that the pins were major collector items because of the inscription on the back and the fact that only so many were made. He said that not every DVC owner would be getting these as there were only so many made. Those who didn't receive the Sept. 11 pin were getting a different pin instead. He basically made us feel really lucky that we got the pins that were randomly mailed to different DVC owners.

Again, this is what I was told. I honestly can't tell you how "truthful" this is.

I called MS again on Tuesday (I think) - and asked them AGAIN for my guidebook - which I requested on November 1st. They said there had been a delay in mailing out the ones to those that said they hadn't gotten their's, and that they had just been mailed the day before. I'm still waiting....

Anyway - I asked about the pins, and she basically told me the same thing as before -- if I didn't get them - then I'm just SOL. I told her that I would appreciate it if she would pass on my disappointment. I mean - I hate to "look a gift horse in the mouth," but - with Internet boards like these - we ALL knew about them, and it's very unfortunate that they didn't set aside some reserves to replace those that may have gotten lost in the mail.

Sorry to beat a dead horse - but I'm still REALLY disappointed!

I emailed about my guidebook and got a reply that its been "taking 8-10 weeks to receive them" and that they'd "look into it"...I'm getting a little po'd about this. Its time to plan 2003!

And I still hold with theft...dh used to work in a mailing center where this stuff happened all the time (he fired a lot of people too...his first management position). I think what we're hearing from the various cm's is basically "spin"....they can't really do anything about it and we are sol...so they've created a story that will help appease some. I'm not really mad at Disney over not getting the pins since I really don't think its their fault in any way...the guidebook however...well....anyone else here close on their sale on Oct. 4th of 2000? I think its the same situation and the need to get their act together. I suspect I'll get my guidebook sometime next spring (as I did my member cards and welcome kit last year....about 6 months late!)

A friend of mine never received her Castaway pins - opened envelope and no pins. She was MAD.

The one I saw for sale on ebay was not anything like the one I received from DVC, too few stripes and too few stars.
I think, from the looks of the card it was mounted on, it was available for purchase at Disney World.

I just saw one today that looked really close to the two I received in the mail. It was at the Disney Store but it had no inscription on the back and seemed a little smaller. I could only tell the difference when I picked it up and looked closely. If I had one of the others with me, I'm sure I would have noticed more differences.

Nothing made its way out west. If it wasn't for you guys, I wouldn't even know the pins exist.

Gail you are right. The ones that are being described here are pins that are available to the general public. I was teaching a computer class just this Friday and about fell over when a woman had one of the pins on. I immediately ask her if she was a member. She said no that she had bought the pin on a trip to WDW in October. When I looked closer at the pin I realized that the pin was slightly different from the DVC ones. The stars are larger and take up more room on the pin.

I email the ebay seller and informed her that it was not a DVC pin that she was selling. She responded that she had made a mistake and would relist the proper pin today.
I guess it just rubbed me the wrong way that something that DVC did that was nice was going to be used to garner a profit.
She also stated in her reply that she is from NY and had lost people in the tragedy and therefore it was ok to list the pins. Also, she was listing the items for a friend. I am not sure what that has to do with anything, but, that is what she said.
Having said that and before ANYONE has a hissy fit because I mentioned NY here, NOTHING I have said here is an attack on anyone, anything or anywhere in NY. It was a paraphrase from a response from someone from NY.

Gail, I too was watching that auction. I just went over to check the pin listed and it is now gone. Looks like she just pulled it and did not relist with the proper pin. Makes you wonder if she was trying to sell a regular red/white/blue Mickey pin to unsuspecting buyers.

It seems like it would be difficult to overlook the lack of an inscription on the back of the pin.

There are, however, some genuine DVC pins for sale on ebay, most of which are being sold by a guy in Hawaii. I wrote him and asked if he was a DVC member. He replied that he was not, and that he was the "buy and sell guy" for he and his friends.

Curiouser and curiouser. He has sold at least two pins at $45 each and now has the set of two pins, card included, for sale at $150.

The seller did relist it with the correct one, saw it earlier today.
Not sure why this bothers me so much. I think it would have been much nicer for this seller to offer one to one of the members who did not receive one. Guess the almighty dollar wins out over being nice. If I had one to spare (Dee and I are both wearing ours) I think I would offer it to a member.
