how did my thread become closed?

In looking through my list of subscribed to threads, I noticed that one I started had a little lock icon on it, and then realized this meant the thread had been closed. How does that happen?

Thread are closed by the moderators of a board. Generally threads are only locked if they become troublesome or controversial and the conversation is not in keeping with the guidelines of the DIS. In the case of your thread, that board has one "official" thread at the top of the board for the subject you posted on, and they keep all discussion to that thread, because in the past conversations have turned ugly. So your thread was closed.

We always encourage people to please read any threads stickied at the top of each forum. They often contain helpful FAQ, or threads on common subjects.

If you have any further questions, you can always send a PM to one of the moderators on that board.

Hope this helps! :)

that makes perfect sense but my post wasn't anything controversial at all - no worries!

What you posted wasn't--but that is a topic that often takes on a life of it's own and becomes a problem as more and more people start sharing their opinions. It is absolutely nothing to do with you and it was a perfectly legitimate question. Unfortunately, after you hang around here a while you realized that there are some topics that just seem to inspire others to pile on so moderators have to have some way of keeping up with them. It is much easier to do that on one thread than to have several different ones with people going every direction.
