How deep should your pool be for safe diving?

We built a pool a few years ago and wanted a diving board - we were told by our pool company we needed 9 feet - plus at least a 36 foot length to accomodate he distance people dive. To be sure it didn't get too shallow too quickly or too steeply we ended up with 37 feet and a fairly small and deep "shallow end". We put a broad step at the shallow end for people who want to just sit in the water.

Everyone, including our pool company, tried to talk us into putting in a shallow pool, but I resisted vigorously! I am so glad I did. I love my deep pool.

Is a diving board absolutely necessary?

Be safe :wizard:

Apparantly, Insurance companies are realizing they are not. When we bought this house, one of the riders on our hazard insurance state that if we have a pool installed, we are not allowed to put in a diving board or a slide.

We can't have a backyard tramploline, either.

DH owns a pool and spa company and will not sell or install diving boards because of the danger.

How deep should your pool be for safe diving? Not using a diving board, but diving in from the edge of the pool..... can you dive in at 6 feet? We are having a pool built & I didn't want it to be any deeper cause it will take away from our shallow end.........

Hi! How is the pool construction going? The pool we are having built is 6ft in the deep end. I've already told our youngest, (daughter, almost 15), there will be absolutely NO diving!

I've also been looking for signs to put up somewhere on the fence by the deep end of the pool. If you search online for "pool signs" you'll come up with several companies that sell signs. I saw a yellow "no diving" sign that is inexpensive and I'm going to order one for our pool.

8 feet

Our pool is 6 feet and it is NOT recommended. I'm 5'5"--that's only 5 inches of stopping room once my whole body is in the water.

Public swimming pools I think it is 8 feet + for diving.

The father of a friend of mine broke his neck belly flopping into a six foot deep end. He never hit the bottom, his neck actually snapped on impact with the water. Accidents like this can happen regardless of the depth of the pool.

I didn't break my neck--but from a 10 meter feet first jump--a slight angle created a belly flop affect. I have neck problems to this day--11.5 years later. neck to toe felt like I hit cement all day long---the next day I couldn't move my head at all.

Unfortunately, our construction hasn't started yet. Apparently it is taking a while to get the permit...but as soon as that arrives we are in business! They better start soon cause we keep changing things  We have increased to 36 x 21 (at the widest points)...but we are sticking with 3 1/2 feet to 6 feet as well............. I've enjoyed your thread about your pool construction! :teeth:

Our pool company said that the "rules" were 41 ft long and 9 ft deep to allow for a graduated shallowing of the pool.
We chose not to do a "diving" pool and our is 33 ft long and 8 feet deep.
;)

Here, the state law is 12 feet from height of board to bottom of pool. We took our boards down a few years ago as we have a 10 foot only. We allow diving from the side in the 10 foot only.

Swim team- per US Swim Team Association- or whatever they call it, is 6 foot from point of entry....not where the block is-but where you actually hit the water.

Even the best diver can injure themselves diving....I have taught both DD's how to dive from the blocks, a swimteam dive, and they are capable, but they dont dive except for the 10 foot.

Home pools, there are no regulations, only public pools
