How come some political threads are allowed?

I don't want to point fingers because I generally think they should be allowed which is why I'm not reporting anyone, but how come SOME conversations about medical/prescription plans are allowed? Specifically, posts which are devoted to complaints? I thought we are supposed to be practicing a non-political policy on the DIS. I happen to think the recent up-tick in non-specified complaints could be an attempt to manipulate people's perceptions of a current hot button topic which shall remain nameless. After all, would someone be allowed to make a post completely devoted to an opposing point of view? An entire thread devoted to how much someone loves what they have and why? Hmmmm, it just begs the question "How come" doesn't it?

Complaining about my premiums going up is not political.

Complaining about my premiums going up and offering my opinion that the current Congress is fixing or breaking it is political.

I don't think discussing options is political. that only starts when you add "these guys like it" or "those guys hate it" etc...

but I have not read the thread to which you are referring.

I've not seen any get political.

Since when is medicine political unless we discuss the unmentionables doing unmentionable things?

I read that thread. It never occurred to me that it was political. I just chose my insurance options for next year today. I think a lot of companies do that at this time of year.

What would stop someone from saying they love what they have? If someone says they don't like theirs, and someone says, wow, I never had that problem, mine is great, are you saying that wouldn't be allowed?

Complaining about an insurance plan is no different than complaining about a lame product that we bought at Walmart and now it doesn't work. People are discussing the quality of something they purchased and comparing it to experiences others have had.

It doesn't become political just because it pushes someone's buttons.

Where is that thread? My plan is changing and picking the right coverage is driving me nuts. I'd love to see that thread.

ETA: Found it. Wonder if we work for the same company,

"I'm not going to mention any names, but I'm going to give you so much information that you will know exactly who I'm talking about!"

:rotfl2:

Isn't it a wee bit hypocritical to whine about the unfairness of "political threads", when you are allowed to keep your "political signature"?:confused3

I don't find that thread to be particularly political. From the logic you are using ANY thing can be constured as political (which is actually what always worried me with that rule--too vague for me to feel "safe" posting). I agree with others that it is likely a big topic now because it is open enrollment time at most US companies. I am still confused about what counts as a religious thread and what does not and why some religious and political signatures and avatars (like your signature or the avatar which is the symbol for a religion) are allowed, yet it seems to go against policy. I am not trying to get anyone in trouble; in fact I belong to the UU church someone else has represented in their avatar--but it does jump out as me as incongruous to the rules every time I see it (I probably notice it more because it is a symbol I identify with), just as your signature does (there are probably other things too that I don't notice for one reason or another--which is good, less to drive me batty:rotfl2:) .

This reminds me of threads a while back asking why some religious postings were allowed while others are deleted and infractions issued. The answer is simple: "Their house, their rules." If you don't like the rules, don't post; it isn't appropriate to question moderation in public forum.

I admit it seems this thread is a strech and may possibly have been started to complain rather than legitimately question. I have a hard time seeing how it is wrong to try to legitimately clarify what the rules are so that one can be sure to play by them. I am not one to cause trouble and like to respectful of the board rules, but soemtimes I am genuinely confused. It does not mean I am angry at the mods or questioneing their judgement--just trying to make sure I know what is an is not okay. I have seen many others posting on such threads who also seem to just want clarification--not to complain. I have never seen DIS moderators take offense at a genuine question or concern; I hope you mean that last comment to imply that it is not okay to publicly disagree with the set rules--not that is not okay to have questions about them:confused3

It would be nice to talk about some important issues going on in the world today. Health insurance being one of them. Everything can be done in moderation. It does not have to turn political. From what I read on that post it did not seem political???

Probably for the same reason your political signature is allowed counting down until the next Presidential election.

I don't see anything wrong with posting a question for a moderator...on a public forum, as long as it's asked in a respectful and polite manner.

That, however, is not generally the case in online forums. Questioning moderation is typically sanctionable. That may or may not be the case here on the DIS, but you be the judge based on the Posting Guidelines:
9. MODERATORS: The DIS has a wonderful group of Moderators who have volunteered to assist our visitors and monitor the boards. Part of their responsibilities is ensuring that our guidelines are followed which may require that a thread is edited, deleted, closed or moved. If these decisions impact you, we ask that you respect them. Should you have any questions, please direct them to admin@wdwinfo.com. Any discussion about a Moderating decision that takes place on the boards could result in an infraction.
Again, you be the judge regarding this.

Regardless of what the deal is here on the DIS, I can assure you that in general, in Internet forums, that questioning moderation, even if done in what the inquisitor feels is a respectful and polite manner, can result in message deletion and/or infractions being assessed. Just a friendly warning for folks who participate in any number of online forums.

Hmmm...very interesting about the OP's "political signature!"

While I've never had occasion to ask, if I did have a question, as long as it's not something private....I'll ask it publicly, in a respectful manner.

But thanks for the warning.
