How cold does it get in VA in the winter???

DH and I got our probably move date to move to Portsmouth, Virginia May 15. We lived in the VA Beach area 2 years ago for about 5 months, June to November. But weren't there to go through the winter. Just wanted to know how cold it gets there in the winter. Any current Virginia residents know?

It gets very cold. You can expect lows in the 20s during the coldest weeks of the year, and occasionally hitting single digits.

Virginia has very COLD winters and HOT summers.

Definetly not colder than Chicago on average. You could have highs in the 60s one week and lows in the single digits or teens the next week. It's very random.

It's not that bad really. I grew up mostly in WA state and was used to low teens and sub zero weather during the winter. Then I moved to Mississippi and it was unheard of to be below 25, then I moved here to Yorktown, VA and it seems to run between 15 and 40 in the coldest part of the winter. All in all not bad though. I don't think the summer is all that hot but then I just moved here from the MS Gulf Coast where 95 degrees and 95% humidity is the norm from April thru October. It's amazing to me how cool it gets here at night!

Will you be here in time for the Dis meet at Busch Gardens on 9/25?

I'm hoping the wind chills don't get as bad as they do in the "Windy city"! I think that's what bothers me the most.

Shugardrawers, no i won't be in VA until May 2005. We are going to be in FL from Dec until May, then we are supposed to move to VA. but thanks for the invite! I'd love to go to a Dis meet when I get there.

Aw Dan, don't worry! I will always be a Chicagoan at heart!!! When's the next meet? I need to get to one before we leave!

As a transplanted Yankee, I can tell you that the first winter seemed pretty mild to me. As I got acclimated to the weather, it feels much, much colder now. And Joe's right...it gets HOT in the summertime. We typically have our AC on from April through October.

I've heard it gets cold and windy here, but I haven't felt it yet. Just moved here at the end of March. We were here for a visit last Christmas. On December 24 we had our jackets OFF. Even while at the beach that day! I'm guessing it must be January and February that are the killer months.

I think it's rather chilly here this summer though. I'm used to 95 degrees and stagnant air in FL! It feels cool here.

The wind is defiantely NOT as bad in Virginia. I have visited Chicago in the winter and the wind just goes right through you. It gets cold in Virginia, but the wind chill is not what it is up there.

We get some pretty cold spells, but for the most part the winters are not that bad. Yes, January and February are usually the worst and those are the months we usually get snow. However, we have had some years w/VERY little bad winter weather. (Of course, we had have a fair amount of snow the last two years). I live the No. Va. and we tend to get more of the icy/slushy/wintery mix messes than real snow.

One of the things I love about Virginia is that we do indeed get all four seasons.

I've been in Chicago in the winter, and VA is nowhere near that. Here in Richmond, we might get some light dustings or up to an inch, but the "enough to shut down the city" amount (which is about 10 inches or more) comes maybe once every two to three years, if that.

The mountains will get a little more, the Tidewater area a little less thanks to warm air coming up the gulf stream moderating things some.

The only thing is the way people panic and mob the grocery stores to stock up on milk, bread, toilet paper, and anything they think they might run out of during the 1-2 days they might get snowed in.

I lived here last winter and didn't think it was that bad. I think Philly winters are way worse than S. VA We had cold spells here certainly and a few days of high winds, but nothing like what i'm used to. Didn't even get hardly any snow. I think we actually got 2 maybe 3 inches 1 weekend, and the only reason we stayed in was cause DH says nobody down here has any clue how to deal with snow. He's from Wisconsin, so we both think its really funny when the forecast calls for an inch or 2 of snow and schools shut down. But all in all it was a nice winter.

I haven't lived here in 17 years, so I don't remember the winters and we just moved here this summer so I have nothing to reference. Just wanted to say hi and give an early welcome to VA.

Could depend where in the state you are. This area is a peninsula and an island basically. A friend living on the beach says...WINDY!!

True. It will be interesting to see this coming winter. I haven't been in "winter" in 15 years! LIGHT snow would be nice.
