I know nothing about corn rows but my one son wants them. He surfs and they would probably be good for this. The problem is he,he hates letting his hair grow long because it gets so thick. So, my questions....
How long does his hair have to be to get started?
Where do I take him to get it done?
How expensive?
How about maintenance, how often does he go in and get it redone. When he is tired of it, does he just shave his head?
His hair is very straight and thick. Right now it is at that bushy growing out a buzz length.
Thanks I know someone here can help.

I took my son to a shop today to see how much it will cost to get his hair braided. (I don't have the patience to do it myself) It will cost $35 for a wash, blow dry and braids. DS has a small afro, he has not had a hair cut in about 3 months.

If you don't have any shops near you that braid, your son may be able to get a friend to do it.

After it's done, he should sleep with a doo rag or stocking cap on so that the braids will last for a while.

How long it last will depend on how he takes care of it, how fast his hair grows, and how small the braids are( I think smaller braids last longer). When you first get your hair braided it's tight, as your hair grows the braids become loose. When this starts to happen, I take my braids out. I had my hair braided last month, the braids were medium size and I was able to keep them in for about 3-4 weeks.

If you go to a beauty supply shop, you'll find all kinds of hair care products for braids. Or you can just use mousse(rub it over and between the braids) and oil sheen.

Your son may only want to keep them in for a few weeks at a time. When he's tired of them, all he has to do is take them out and wash his hair. No need to shave his head.:D

So how long would his hair have to get. Like three months growth? Would even the shorter parts have to be, say 2 inches long??

If he is blonde, make sure that he puts sun screen on his scalp if he is going to be surfing.

I had my hair braided in Jamaica once, and I got the worst sunburn on my scalp! Ouch!
