I am discouraged and I had something to say in my defense but felt it was not appropriate to vent here.

No need to defend yourself. Your child had severe, though rare complications to the flu. That is a heartbreak to you and those you love. The person who mentioned the flu wasn't demeaning your suffering. No matter what you joke about someone is going to be defensive. They certainly are not trying to hurt you.
I wish your child well and am so sorry he developed such a tragic complication.
