How bad is San Angel Inn?

Love San Angel. Love true Mexican food. It’s a must do on every trip. It totally perplexes me as to how someone can call it nasty. It may not be to someone’s liking but exactly what is nasty about it?

To be fair, to some people, it's 'nasty'. To others (like myself), it's pretty good. Maybe the 'nasty' people visited on an off day. Maybe those who love it have gotten lucky compared to most who go there. Whatever the case, unless it's actual garbage served from a garbage can, I take 'nasty' comments with a huge grain of salt (as I do 'amazing!' ones).

It's like I tell my kids when they argue (endlessly it feels like) over video game characters...everyone has their own opinion and everyone has a right to that opinion. Just because you think some pokemon dude is 'dumb' doesn't make it dumb....it's dumb to YOU. That's it.

I know that my meal at San Angel Inn three years ago wasn't 'nasty' by any objective measure to me (which includes years of experience with authentic food from countries across Latin and South America). It wasn't the greatest meal of its kind I've ever had, but it was well above many meals at similar places outside of WDW. Members of my party, who'd been to San Angel Inn a few years earlier and had a poor experience, commented on how much they enjoyed this particular meal there. So maybe it was a really good day. All I know is, my meal wasn't 'nasty'.

I have had, IMO, not so good (if not quite nasty) meals at places really highly recommended on these boards. Garden Grill breakfast tops that list (the eggs were hard and dry both times they sent some out, and the sausage had a really off taste...I was really, really disappointed as this meal came close to 'nasty' on my taste scale). Tusker House left my group of 10 unimpressed. Kona was really 'meh' for a 'hidden gem'. I travel with a diverse group of people who are adventurous diners, and none of us want to go back to any of the above places. Probably because we were there on an off day. But our opinions that these places aren't on our 'go back' list is just as valid as people who love those places and go back every trip.

People are different, and I tend to giggle at when opinions are offered as absolute truths.
