How bad are the winds at sea?

we were on the edge of hurricane sandy and it was pretty darn windy....but no, no one got blown off the deck...
although to be honest i thought the ship was going to tip over it went so far over (that sail effect)..it didn't though :)
but no...no one got blown off the deck...

We were also on the edge of a hurricane. Yes it was windy and we know it before leaving port. Nothing keep people off the top decks and most of the of chairs were tied down. We still had a great time no matter what the weather was.

Advice: Do not wear loose skirts on the upper decks. Just saying.

Learned that the hard way wearing a nice dress with loose flowing skirt heading to Palo's. We took the wrong elevator. Not a problem we said - we'll walk across the deck. Fortunately it was dark. Now I make sure to use the right elevator.

We were on the Fantasy following Sandy 10/25 thru 10/27.

Fwiw the time is off a few hours and the date is one day behind/back on the pics.

This was before it got rough.

This ship position (below) is where I thought all hell was going to break loose. I was wrong. It was a few hours later at 12:30 am just as we were entering the tiny sliver of the Bermuda Triangle. :scared1:
That's when the rogue wave sets began.

Also notice the ship speed. 20 knots with estimated seas of 25 -30 feet, at the estimated time of 7 -9 pm.

This was a display at Guest Services that was updated daily. We were clueless of tropical development until late afternoon after St Thomas departure. That's when Commodore Tom informed pax that we were going to miss CC due to tropical development.

They gave up trying to keep the lido chairs lashed down on our sailing. lol
They had more success stacking and lashing all the loungers together. Tied to the railings and post to prevent the huge pile from sliding. Can't find that pic.

No worries if you are sailing the Fantasy. She handled those seas like a true lady, cutting though huge seas with little effort. It was the rogues she struggled with. Never thought a ship that size could get slapped around like we experienced.

Pax aboard that night performed the sea trials on her hatches, welds, ballasts, shock test, etc. :bitelip:
I was comforted knowing she came out of the best shipyard in the world though.
Germans know how to build.
DD said she saw an apparent wind speed in the three digits before we lost power in our cabin.
I confirmed that the next morning with others who had power throughout the night.

I'm glad to report she passed her sea trial with flying colors like a true lady, albeit with less cushions, chairs, balcony dividers, intact glass panels, doors, chinaware, glasses, etc.

An unforgettable experience as you can hear. :)

BTW DCL tested the waters last time during a storm in the southern Gulf Stream, so it's definitely someone else's turn next time. And RCCL has been getting the short stick up north, so I feel it's CCL turn to go first next time. :) IOW DCL will be extremely cautious near storms, especially in daylight IMO. And other companies will go first and test the waters.

ETA; These Disers thought they were going overboard thru the glass at Quiet Cove when the first rogue hit. The parents were sitting on the couch with the back of the couch forward, then rogue, then couch slide powerfully into glass starboard side.

Did I mention how strong that glass is surrounding the Lido Deck?

May you all have smooth seas. :thumbsup2

ETA; My apologizes "gerry". I had no idea the previous video was a propaganda piece. My bad.
But I feel once posted ....

However,

Allow me to now post the real unedited version of their experience seated in Quiet Cove.
Please notice the sudden horizontal movement of the ship prior to the "wave" that moved them seated in a pretty heavy duty wicker padded large couch. That couch slid many feet at great power into the glass wall of the side of the ship. IOW if that glass failed that family would have been lost at sea. They lost items overboard that weren't tied down or attached. Shoes, phones, purses, etc. Does any of that info get published? Of course not.

They were seated recording the rough seas and waves generated in the adult pool
splashing out as any pax may do given the oppurtunity. Have you seen the splash guards in the adult pool?

How many Fantasy sailors have seen waves coming out of the Quiet Cove pool?

Prior to that big tilt/wave, everything was rough but predicable, as it had been for two days of pretty rough seas. So how far does the ship have to tilt to eject that much water out of the adult pool that fast?
Yes. 95% of that water is from the adult pool.

Anyone want guess how much water was left in the pool?

Did you notice that tilt of the camera/ship? That was our first rogue wave captured on film.
The rogue hit us unexpectedly, without any warning, tilted the vessel, and the results are captured on camera. The wave was big and quick and slapped us to the right violently.

At that moment items all over the vessel went flying off the shelves. Yes, I said flying, not falling. Then it repeated every 20 - 30 minutes for 4 hours. It wasn't the huge seas, it was the rogue slaps.

Does anyone hear the background screams of other pax nearby in the video?
Specifically those a deck above?

This went on for a few more spooky hours.

BTW those doors in the video were destroyed overnight. The staircase was a waterfall. You couldn't walk up or down during certain vessel pitches.

It's OK. We aboard have already heard many times no one believes us.
We had 20 foot waves and 80 knots winds. Everyone was safe, and pax exaggerated conditions. The ship listed 4 degrees and we are pitiful for being concerned for our safety.

IOW please resist posting what we already know and have heard. In fact, please don't post if at all possible. :worship:

ETA, Video Poster; OMG, your kids were with you? Never noticed that before for some reason.

Hope you all are better now.

Peace
