How are your gardens doing with this heat?

Ours isn’t doing so well. Last year we had tons of lettuce but this year it all went to seed early, as did our basil. Last night we had our first couple of zucchini and summer squash and the skins were hard. Tomatoes are the only thing that seem to be doing ok.

My chives are all dried up, but my weeds are thriving! Lol.

It was late May by the time I got my garden in, so it's not quite producing yet. Tomatoes have struggled with blossom drop in the heat. The younger plants have done much better it seems. Cucumbers, green peppers, squash and zucchini are all growing well but still early to produce. Jalapenos? They're the only plants loving this heat! I saw the first blooms on the pole beans this morning, so I'm hoping for a good crop from them. Cabbage starts for this fall are off to a good start. My basil and lettuce failed this year too. I've heard several people say they've struggled with their gardens this year. I'm so tired of constantly watering the garden.

My veggie garden is having one of its best years.

Too many tomatoes, too many cucumbers. Hahaha! I give them away, roast and pickle them. Herb garden has been out of control. Thank god my neighbors all love getting baskets of them to use. Same with the lettuce patch, which I learned a few years ago to protect since little wildlife friends have mowed it down in the past! My potatoes and carrots aren’t ready for harvest yet. Zucchini is looking really good and green beans have been delicious this year!

I use cheesecloth to shade my younger plants when the sun is especially hot and I only water early in the AM or after the sun has gone down, as they will cook if they are in hot water.

Oh, yeah! Forgot about all of my peppers. They are doing well too. Especially the mexibelles. We’ve been putting them on homemade pizzas. They are a cross between a green pepper and a jalapeño. Yummy!

Zucchini has been nuts, good cucumbers, jalapeños, green beans, tomatoes are slow but have a bunch of green ones.

The heat hasn’t seemed to be a problem but the Japanese beetles are horrible.

Heat is doing a number on ours. Squash, zucchini, and cukes were very very low producing and what they did produce was almost inedible. Girl on the other side of us, who knows why, has zucchini plants that are so huge they took over her little raised beds, and is getting zucchini like baseball bats. So far tomatoes are doing good. I just picked a bowl of orange, yellow and red cherry tomatoes, and noticed that 3 of the bigger Lemon Boys are starting to ripen. I hope they don't start cracking and the bottoms rotting out like in past years.
On the other hand, my herb garden is doing very well. I usually have problems with the parsley, this year it's almost as big as the basil. I have 3 kinds of basil, the parsley, chives, cilantro, oregano and cat nip growing in it

The rabbits and birds ate all of my strawberries - I had a promising blueberry bush, and those were bird food too.

Raspberries were ok. Lettuce and arugula are in porch planters and have been doing well, but have needed LOTS of water. Tomatoes ok - but the zucchini forest I have is going crazy! It seems I look in the morning, and I see a few tiny zucchini, and by evening they are huge with 10 more! Lots of zucchini backing, cooking, and giving away!

Picked our first Patty Pan squash today! Garden is doing OK. It needs lots of watering. The basil seems bitter already, though.

Fine. But 105 degrees in the summer is the norm here.

My cherry tomatoes and basil have LOVED this...and my mint has come back in bulk (again) to annoy me. My dill is sad, my parsley and oregano are fine, my pepper plant keeps being eaten by a lizard, and my beets are giving me greens (but not beets) for the last 2 months...all in all, it's actually been a really good year for my garden...

Last year we started to get the lantern flies late in the summer. But many areas especially where we walk at the beach, grounds covered with them. Friends of ours have them. Have not seen any by us yet. Hopefully we get the cucuzzi before the lantern flies get to us.

My dh is obsessed with the garden/his vegetables. We are not going to be here a few days in August. Rather than have one of my kids to come everyday, he is setting up hoses (with the holes/mist spray) with timers on them. He will move his pots too so the water can reach them. My flowers will most likely end up dead

I'm happy I bought a smart water control for my garden this year. It makes life much easier. I was really hesitating as it was not cheap for me, and I also met some negative feedbacks on the internet, but still decided to buy it. And I never regret about my decision.
