How Are Ticket Upgrade Costs Calculated?

We've never purchased a package before but are doing free dining this year. Since I have an activated AP I purchased a package with 1 Day MYW tickets for myself, DD and DM. My daughter and mom will need to upgrade their tickets to 4 Day MYW w/park hopper passes. My question is this: How does Disney credit the one day ticket toward the upgrade? Do I get the monetary credit for the one day ticket or just a "day" credit?

I'm paying $71.36 for each 1 day MYW ticket. A 4 day parkhopper costs $260.93 as per the WDW website. Will an upgrade from a 1 day MYW to a 4 day MYW w/parkhopper cost us $189.57 ($260.93 - $71.36) or $252.41, the cost of a 3-day parkhopper? If this sounds confusing it is because I am very, very confused myself. Is this the most cost-effective way to use the tickets? My head hurts.

You will get the gate value of your ticket applied to your upgrades. So, your 1-day passes will contribute $71.36 towards the cost of a 4-day hopper (which would have cost $260.93 at the gate).

You will only be able to upgrade one 1-day pass for each 4-day hopper that you purchase.

$260.93 is the advance purchase price on a 4 day PH. The gate price which is the price they will use when you do the upgrade is $263.06 w/tx
