How are the crowds end of December?

We would like to be at US and IOA the last few days of December. But are the crowds bad ?
Where is a good place to stay for the time?
It will be me, DH, DD10, DD5, and DS2. A friend of mine recommended the Nickolodeon Hotel.

Is it too cold in December to ride the water rides?

Unfortunately, the week between Christmas and New Year's is packed everywhere. LONG lines at every park so be ready to wait for everything. The Nick hotel is very kid friendly but I have not stayed there. As far as the water rides, I don't ride unless it's really hot so I won't be riding any water rides in December.

The crowds are the biggest of the year during Christmas week. I went once during that time and I will never do it again. I think it is a total waste of money. We have always pulled our kids out of school for a few days in mid-September and gone then. Much more peaceful, and the kids didn't miss anything important at school.
