How are room charges done now?

Do you still get a charging limit based on resort class ($1500 deluxe, $1000 mod, etc)? And does your card still not get charged until you either hit that limit or check out? Last time I was there I remember a mid-trip charge before we hit our limit and as I recall, people weren't sure if the policy had changed or if it was an anomaly that had something to do with using a debit card as the charging card for that room.

Anyone with recent experiences that can illuminate for me?

Thanks!

I had this issue on a trip in the spring. I definitely did not reach any sort of limit but they charged my card. I had them reverse it and they put it on the gift cards, but it was just a pain I was trying to avoid. They didn't seem to have an explanation as to why it was charged early. We were there again last week (different resort) and didn't have any issues. We weren't charged until the end of the trip.

That's what happened on our last trip. We had $500 in gift cards to use, but our room charge card was charged mid-trip. They reversed it, but it was a big pain just having to go down there to sort it out.

They do still operate the same way as always. The limits have changed but I forget what they are now, other than Deluxe is $2000
Now, one thing they seem to do is sometimes charge early and the best guess is if you reach half of your limit well before half of your trip is past then they'll run the charges.
For instance, if the limit at a Value is $1000 and you reach $600 3 days in to an 8 day trip they may well run the card. Their thought is if you continue charging at that rate you will exceed the limit early in the trip and they want to avoid any issues with a card not working with a large charge. I don't believe that's confirmed by anyone, just a best guess as to why it happens.
Of course, it could be nothing more than a glitch too.

We also were charged 4 days into our 10 day trip and we also had them reverse it. Now I try to stop by the desk every other day to payoff any balances with our GC and to also get a printout of charges. It makes it real easy to keep track:)

  • Values and Moderates: $1500 charge limit
  • Deluxe and DVC: $2000 charge limit

It's a shame you can't put down money onto your room before hand. No reason why that shouldn't be possible.

I actually spoke to a CM about this the last time I was there. He said it is not just your resort category, but can also have to do with number of people with charging privileges, length of stay and if you are a previous guests. He said the general rule of thumb is 1000 for Value, 1500 for Moderate and 2000 for Deluxe.

I remember very well putting down Disney Dollars on our room account on arrival night at AASports.

They stopped doing this because once guests put their gift cards on their room/account they would throw them out. Then if they didn't use all the $$ they had put down, the resort had no way of refunding the $$ back as that $$ has to go back on the card it was taken from. It really was a nightmare for the front desk CMs.

There are still a couple of rogue CMs that will do it, but they are not supposed to.

Interesting bit of info there. I could never personally relate to not using all my money on my gift cards.:D

I can confirm this; when I transferred to the front desk many years ago we were still doing this, and this exact situation came up constantly. Cash (and Disney Dollars, which were treated as cash) had issues of their own. I agree it was nice when it worked, but there were just too many times when it caused too many problems.
