Hi guys, I need help. I am determined to do this and I can't remember how it was worded. PLEASE help.

My DD and her new DH is moving into their first home on Friday and I want to buy a gift. I remember my favorite gift when we moved into our home was a loaf of bread and a bottle of wine. Attached to it was a note. It said something like may you never go hungry and ???????? Is anyone of you familar with this. I was told that it was an Italian custom. I have read about it in the newspaper since. I just can't remember how to word it and I am not a composer by anymeans. I would be forever indebted for any ideas and help. Sandy

Bread so may you never go hungry, wine so may you never go thirsty and salt to mend all wounds

Traditional Italian housewarming gift

i've heard something about the salt to bring flavor to your life

Have several versions of this saved for later use....pick and choose as you like!

housewarming presents

bread - that this house may never know hunger
salt - that life may always have flavor
and wine - that you may never know thirst

Supposedly of Germanic Origin:
Bread so you'll never go hungry
Salt so you'll have good luck
Wine so you'll never be thirsty.

*flowers so your house may always know beauty.
*Bread so your house may never know hunger.
*Salt so it may always have flavor.
*A candle so the house will never know darkness.
*And sugar so that life will always be sweet.

Thanks so much! Now I have a variety to choose from. Thanks for all that helped me. Does anyone want to help her twin sister figure out what to buy for a housewarming.? She needs ideas and more ideas.

If they're moving to a new area, maybe a regional magazine. Otherwise a mag subscription to Better Homes & Gardens or something similar.

Donna Reed says it in It's a Wonderful Life.

Since this is her twin sister, I think I would go practical on the housewarming gift:

Home Depot gift card for the 10 to 20 trips she will make the 1st month.

Shelf lining paper for the kitchen.

If she is going to have more bathrooms then she had before maybe a nice set from bed bath and beyond (she can exchange if she doesn't like the design).

Starting groceries if moving out of your home (like ketchup, mustard, salad dressing, flour, sugar, etc.) in a nice basket.

If it is not her first home but she has thrown out persishables - then refrig start stuff - milk, mayo, veggies, etc.

I am the twin sister and I thank you all for the help. All ideas are greatly appreciated and am interested in what others can come up with!!! I love the idea that my mom is doing, she was so ecstatic when her question was answered!!! Now I am the only one left to get a gift!!!!

Some things we got...
--address labels with a picture of our house on them (made by our realtor!)
--champagne, cheese, crackers, and chocolates for our first celebration
--home logbook to keep up with receipts, projects, paint colors, measurements, etc. (not sure where this was bought...think it came from a catalog like Lillian Vernon or Miles Kimball maybe)
--personalized silver photo album with a "front door" cover...from Personalized Creations catalog
--help from our old friends who we moved across the street from...they came over to help us paint, put up moulding etc...very much appreciated!!
--patio furniture (from the in-laws) since it was the first house we had with a patio

--MIL got a sketch of her home and matching notecards from her realtor...that was really nice! you can find artists who will do a pen/ink sketch from photos so they don't have to be there in person

Have also seen someone start a scrapbook titled "Our House"...put in the first page with house as it was when bought...with sold sign in yard, etc...and great if you can get pictures of the rooms empty before furniture arrives. New home-owner can add to it as projects are completed, rooms are decorated, yard is planted, etc. A nice keepsake...

Just some ideas...

Great ideas Katie. I love the idea about the photo album and the pitcures of the empty rooms!!! That might just be the present I will have to do.
