My childhood friend built a new home and she, her husband and three kids should be moving in soon. Any suggestions for a housewarming gift? We live 700 miles apart. This is not their first home however it is quite bigger than their previous home.

I don't know what your budget is but one suggestions is a picture frame, depending on their taste...exotic wood, waterford, lenox, just some ideas.

If you're delivering it in person I would recommend a very nice, heavy, high quality WELCOME mat (there are nice ones at Pier 1). It is something that most people could use a new one of...and they'll think of you every time they walk thru the door.

Or you could get a Friendship wall hanging (if you think their taste would allow hanging it somewhere in the home) - one of those 'friends are hard to find, difficult to leave...impossible to forget'. That one would be very special.

I love the Welcome mat idea, I'm not delivering in person but I wonder if I could find a nice one to be delivered.
Originally I was going to send flowers and a small gift so my budget is around range but then I was thinking the flowers will pass to quickly.

Does this house have anything new that their previous house had?

When one of my sister's moved, their new house had a fireplace. We literally had some firewood delivered to thier house towards the end of moving day, and also purchased them some very inexpensive fireplace tools. (The point of the gift was to let them use their fireplace...I figured she'd eventually want her own set of tools that she would pick out.) With all the helping hands - the firewood was stacked in about 15 minutes. And my sis REALLY loved being able to have the fireplace going that night.

Now - I'm not saying this is the perfect gift for your friend - I'm just trying to "inspire" your creative juices.

Do you know anything about the town she's moving to or could you look it up? A gift certificate from a local greenhouse/nursery would be perfect. They'll probably need to do some landscaping or she could get a nice planter or whatever.

I do like the welcome mat idea too. A personalized one would be cool.

QVC has some nice welcome mats and you could have it delivered direct. I also like the idea of the gc to a nursery especially w/ spring around the corner.

When my friend moved last month, I ordered a platter of sandwiches and some sides, from Jasons Deli. She was able to feed everyone that helped her move. This was not her first home and was basically the same size house, just a better neighborhood/better high school. Not too original, but at least everyone got full. ;-)

Someone gave us a beautiful planter with our house numbers on it like this

I've given these personalized crocks a number of times now, and I also asked dh for one for myself (which I just got for Christmas!!). These are heavy and beautiful. And I can't say enough good things about this company. I wanted something for a family member that I couldn't find on the site and they were super helpful about doing it for me...at no additional charge! (In fact, they've put that design on the website now! LOL) Their items always arrive in perfect condition, packed really well.

I just sent my BFF some coffee from green mountain coffee & a new coffee mug. I almost sent omaha steaks.
