The last time we had to do this, I paid a younger coworker (recent very broke college grad) to come to our apartment and stay for the 8 days with our dog. Shelled out $200, plus bought groceries for her. Sounds like a lot, but if I were to have put the furball into a kennel, it'd have cost $360+ for the same time, and he wouldn't have been able to stay in his own home, with a nice kid to play with him and care for him.
FYI, we live in NYC so $45.00 per day is the average rate for a good kennel.
Now that she's moved on, I have a close friend who likes to stay at our apartment and LOVES my dog. He refuses to take any $$. So my partner and I load up on tons of groceries and snacks for him. And when we return, we usually bring back a gift. And we always take him out for a fancy schmancy dinner somewhere in Manhattan.
