Hotels to require vaccine passports?

So here is a major curveball – it seems the new Oahu vaccine passport program is being extended to hotels. There’s not much information in this article but here it is anyways.

If this eventually extends to Aulani then I have to assume that the hotel will be canceling reservations for anyone who does not reside in the US as we cannot meet Hawaii’s vaccine standards. I can only hope DVC will be refunding all points used to book.

Crap. This list specifically includes the hotel we are staying at in Waikiki after our stay at Aulani. I don't see anywhere though where it specifies you must be vaccinated in the US? Maybe I will call the hotel and ask.

If you look at the Oahu vaccine passport standards that’s where it says what’s acceptable for proof of vaccination. It’s specifically excludes any vaccinations administer it outside of the US.

Yes, the tourism authority recommended that other hotels follow suit. I do hope Disney refunds points of international vax visitors if that’s the case. I downloaded Clear and Common Pass yesterday. CP seems more secure but Clear seems more credible. Those are the two that the state has worked with and the local 24 hr fitness is accepting as digital passports as of yesterday.

Interesting for sure, it definitely makes is hard for intentional, non-US based visitors to Hawaii. Hopefully Aulani doesn't implement, or I would think you have legal grounds to argue with DVC. I would assume DVC will do the right thing if this rule does get implemented, at least you would hope so.

If Aulani could do their own thing I am sure they would accept our vaccinations (after all - they are good enough for DCL).

I do agree with you that DVC would logically have to refund points - after all they will be the ones refusing our reservation. But we all know logic doesn’t always win.

Thank you, I do see it now. Super frustrating. We rented points through David’s, deciding to risk it since it was only 1 night, so I think we’ll be SOL.

At this point, other than restaurant indoor dining, I think Hawaii state gov't will still let hotel decide on their own as to what they require for their guests, so hopefully you will be safe in this regards as far as Aulani is concerned.

The most frustrating part of all this is the knee-jerk timing. The folks making these decisions seem to think that people are planning their Hawaiian vacations a few weeks in advance. People plan these trips many months and even years in advance, they can't be rolling out massive policy changes with just a few weeks notice. It's also puzzling that they decide to roll this out now, after Delta cases have peaked and are currently plummeting.

I wouldn't worry about the State government at this point, I think any future restrictions are going to come from the local Oahu government.

Please let me know if I missed something, but it looks like this is a voluntary move by Highgate, and not an extension of the Safe Access Oahu program. Presumably they are free to set their own standards re proof of vaccination from guests (and hopefully have more leeway to accept international vaccine records)?

It's Highgate's voluntary decision, but I'm reading it as if they're leveraging the Safe Access Oahu passport.

Ok, we just got confirmation from the Park Shore Waikiki that they will accept our Canadian vaccination records for stay at their hotel. This still doesn't solve the problem of restaurants because it appears they will not accept Canadian proof of vaccination.

Is it the Canadian PROOF they don't like, or the Canadian VACCINES? I know they don't like AstraZeneca, but would a Canadian who received Pfizer be okay, or no?

We received 2 shots of Moderna in Canada but that is not recognized for entry to Hawaii or for the Oahu Safe Access. The Park Shore Waikiki saying they will accept our vaccinations in Canada appears to be separate from all of that.

Dang, I'm sorry to hear that.

Thanks. Trying to sort out all of these logistics is giving me a headache! Lol! I think if it was just our family traveling, I would postpone our trip, but since we're traveling with my extended family who are all in the US and therefore this doesn't affect them at all (they're all vaxxed as well), it's a bit harder to ask them all to postpone!

There have been reports of people falsifying vax records. Maybe it’s that. Just read that starting tomorrow they will offer a state vax app for ease of local residents. Don’t shoot the messenger. 😬 PS I love Canadians. I hope something gets worked out with vax records abroad. If the hospitals get out of crisis mode, I can see that being loosened first.
