We are planning our Disney Cruise/Disney World vacation for next July. In the past we have taken advantage of the teacher rate at the Dolphin ($129.00). This year much to my dismay when I called and told them I needad a room for 4 with a roll in shower I was told that the rooms with handicapped bathrooms only have one king sized bed in them. In the past DS has been small enough to be lifted out of his chair for his shower, he has grown quite a bit and this now is NOT an easy task. I was told that we could request 2 connecting rooms, but they are not guarenteed to be connecting (and I may add would be over our budget). I told them how disappointing this info is as we feel s though we are being punished for having a family with a truly delightful boy who happens to be in a wheelchair. I then called Disney and was told that Poly, G Floridian, and Contemp all have rooms that can sleep 4 and have a roll-ins but of course the price was quite a bit more than the $129.00 at the Dolphin/Swan. I was told Port Orleans has a few but they are hard to get and you need to use buses or rental cars to get around. We were hoping to stay in the Swan/Dolphin for the price and for the convience of walking/rolling to EPCOT and to have the boats available to the parks. The buses seem to cause a lot of problems for DS so we try to walk or "Cruise" to the parks we visit. Anyone have any suggestions?? Does the Dolphin/Swan policy seem unfair to anyone else or a I just naive and this is the way it usually is?? What do people do if there is one adult and 2 or 3 children one of whom is in a chair?? Is it to much to ask for 2 double beds and a roll-in?? I did write a letter to Swan/Dolphin just stating that maybe when they do renovations this should be looked into.

If they told you that you had to pay for the 2nd room you need to talk to the hotel manager. Since your family is a family of 4 and that's the standard for all hotel rooms they have to under the ADA give you a second room for free. I just had this argument at a Holiday Inn in CT the doorway for the "regular rooms" bathroom was only 24 inches wide. No way a chair could fit through the door and the handicap rooms only had one bed. The girl working at the desk wouldn't give me a handicap room because it was me, my 2 girls in wheelchairs and my mom. After I spent a good half hour explaining to her that she had to accommodate me not me them she called for the hotel manager who of course new the laws and made sure we were accommodated.

Thanks for that info, Michigan.
I knew that they would have to guarantee 2 connecting rooms and I was going to post that, but I didn't know the other parts you mentioned.

If you decide to go with a WDW resort, you may want to work with WDW RESORTS/SPECIAL RESERVATIONS
(407) 939-7807 [voice]
(407) 939-7670 [TTY]
They can help to reserve the room that would fit your needs.

Thank you so much for the info. Do you think the ruling still applies if they have a room that the wheelchair will fit into bur it only has one bed and no rool in shower??Does it have specifics?I have not as of yet called back the Swan/Dolphin, I emailed them the night I was given the news about not having a room. I am going to wait a few more days and see what their response is . If it is the same I will go ahead and use the info you gave me about the ADA and see if that helps. Again, thank's for the info.

OKW has 2 queen beds in its handicapped studios - but all transportation is by bus.

You can rent points from a member and stay at any of the DVC resorts for less. see the dvc rental/trade board on this site

OKW is the only one with 2 queen beds in the studios, all the others have 1 queen and a full (not queen) size sleeper sofa.

While I can't offer any assistance on the Swan/Dolphin rooms (I'm searching for info on those rooms myself), I can tell you that the Yacht Club has two roll-in shower rooms. That right... just two rooms in that entire, huge resort. It's pretty sad.

Both rooms have two queen beds and a daybed. Hope that helps! Maybe you can get this room at the CKO discount rate (depending on when your trip is).

Good luck!

Andrea

One thing that I have started doing is making sure that I bring along my shower stool and then I can get by with a regular bathtub. I do this because I hope that the roll-in showers will then be available for people who can't transfer the way that I can.
