Florence, SC is about the 1/2 way mark when we used to drive to WDW. We'd take the Florence exit and right off that there are quite a few hotels and the Magnolia Mall. We've stayed at the Fairfield Inn, it was brand new 10 years ago, well kept and very clean. Oh, and easy on the bank account too! I'm sure there have been a few new additions since then!
We stayed somewhere in Santee. I can't remember what it was called, but we got it real cheap through priceline. We were there just long enough to sleep. I'll have to check my trusty old Passporter.
When driving from philly to wdw, always stop in santee for the night. For dinner there, try the clark's inn, good place. So with staying in SC overnight, think about either staying in florence or santee.
Florence would be a good place to stop. It is a fairly large city and should have a variety of places to choose from. Plus there are a lot of new places to eat around the mll. I used to live there and actually worked at Magnolia Mall in college.
They have suites (very limited number) available, sleeps 6, living room, 2 tv's, fridge, sink, coffee...and paid $50 with Mom's AARP discount. Very worthwhile! Their standard rooms are nice as well.
I have allergy issues to the point where I get hives if the bed isn't up to par & I had no problems with Clark's.
