We cannot afford the Universal Resort hotels...So what would you recommend in the area? Days Inn Orlando maingate? Or maybe Baymont Inn? or what?
We're frugal...must be "cheap".

Thanks. We checked into Double Tree and it was $189.00/night.
A bit more then we wish to pay...

Have you checked Hotwire? Depending on your dates, you can normally get a 3* in the Universal area or the SeaWorld/Convention Center area for about $ 40-$55 a night. Priceline is a bit cheaper normally than Hotwire, but you can not identify the hotel or amenities offered at the hotel until after the purchase is made. You can check the hotel lists on Betterbidding.com to help identify a Hotwire hotel or give you an idea of possible hotels you would win on Priceline. If you have not used either service before, I would recommend Hotwire to reduce the uncertainities and also guarantee that you will get a room that is not limited to double occupancy.

If you have a AAA card you can get a standard room at the Doubletree on the AAA site for 89.00 night

I was able to get The Doubletree Resort on Hotwire for $59 my dates are 12/28 thru 12/31. I have never stayed there but it has pretty good reviews. This is the 2nd time I have used Hotwire and I was really pleased the last time, we booked Four Points by Sheraton Studio city last time which I paid $38 per night that time. Let me know if you need any help on Hotwire. Hope you get a nice hotel either way.

Kim

Forgot to add that it is The Doubltree at the entrance to Universal

I've stayed at the Comfort Suites on Major Drive twice now (Major is the 'same' street US/IOA is on so it's CLOSE)....last May and July 2008...

Last May - rate was $100 per night....

The "Suite" was 2 queen beds. Living area with Double Sleeper Sofa, table with 2 chairs, refrig, micro. Also Pool, Hot Tub, Arcade. FREE Shuttle, ALso FREE Breakfast including eggs, sausage, cereals, rolls, muffins, donuts, yogurt, etc. etc. etc.

I have pics of the room....OR I can send you to one of my "Room Review" links...

With my family of Five....when you figure the "price" of the Free Breakfast in...it came out to $60 per night in my mind...and was a great bargain...

Dmail me if you have any questions

Have a great trip,
Mary

The Four Points by Sheraton Studio City that someone else mentioned was always my favorite growing up. It has fun theming and I love that it is so easy to spot. However, on my first trip as an adult, my boyfriend and I stayed at the Country Inn and Suites by Universal and it was a VERY quick drive with free breakfast for about $48 a night I think. Staff was very pleasant too. :)

We stayed at Hyatt PLace Universal across the street from Universal last July. We used Priceline and got it for a steal, $30/night! The regular rate is only $69 on regular dates(higher on some holiday dates) You can walk to US/IOA in about 15 minutes or there is a shuttle 2x in the morning and 2x in the evening. They have huge rooms with a sleeper sofa and free wi fi, plus a fridge and free continental breakfast. The pool wasn't great, if that is important to you.

On Priceline, if you bid on a 3 * or above in the Universal area, you will usually get a great hotel for 1/2 the rack rate. I am going to do this for our summer trip once we narrow our dates down.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but what is the pool like at this Hyatt? I'm always suspicious when they don't show pictures of the pool!

TIA:flower3:

We aren't big swimmers, except for the beach, but it looked like a basic pool to me.:)

Anyone stay or know about the fairfield inn on Canada dr? I've read good reviews so far and it includes a half way decent breakfast as well.

IF this was the Fairfield that was listed for quite some time as #1 with tripadvisor.com...then I TRIED to stay there in '08.....

Somehow in making my online ressies ....I got switched to the Fairfield on Vineland.....

My review is on Tripadvisor.com under "BatonRougeFamily"...

Called "Disappointed". The Fairfield I ended up with was NOT NEAR the value as the Comfort Suites/Major Dr. (have 2 reviews of that as well). I didnt' even try to get the other Fairfield the next time...just went back to my FAVE...Comfort Suites...

DMail if you have questions!
Hugs,
Mary

That Fairfield Inn is excellent. They have good breakfast and it excellent location. Also check on the Orlando magic cards rates to they was cheap for this hotel. It has plenty of restaurants in walking distance. Perkins, TGI Fridays,
Burger King that is all remember.

I trying to decide between Springhill Suites on Universal Blvd or Fairfield Inn on Canada Avenue.
