We are staying 2 nights in Rome before our cruise and 1 night in Barcelona after.

Any recommendations for hotels would be appreciated.

We have stayed twice at the Hotel Colon in Barcelona, across from the Cathedral in the Gothic Quarter. We liked the location, near but not on Las Ramblas.

We stayed here last July after our cruise and we liked this hotel and the location. Just booked it again for a night in May after our Transatlantic, then heading back to Rome for 5 nights.
The rooftop bar has amazing views.

We have booked The Liberty Boutique Hotel in Rome, it looks very nice and good reviews.
Last year we stayed at Hotel L’Orologio Roma, we really liked it a lot, but the price is way higher this year for the room we had, so we are going to try this other one.

Stayed at the Renaissance Barcelona Hotel. Rooms were great, location was a bit of a walk( but an easy one, just down one main street) from the Las Rambles but was close to Placa de Catalunya. Had lots of great restaurant options close by as well. Loved hearing one of the nearby cathedral bells chime from our room.

Placa de Catalunya is actually a great location. There's a big metro station there that links to a lot of the city. Eixample and Las Ramblas aren't far away. The Corte Ingles department store is convenient and has a good cafeteria at the top with amazing views and convenient hours most of the day. We stayed near the Renaissance in a rental in summer 2019. Very convenient area.

We've stayed at Le Meridien on Las Ramblas - great location, good restaurant; the Renaissance Barcelona Hotel - good location, decent food; and the Hilton Diagonal - location isn't as good though not bad but the restaurant was good and the rooftop bar was nice. So far, Le Meridien was our favourite and we went back to eat there a couple of times when staying at the Renaissance.

In Rome, we stayed at an Airbnb within walking distance to the train station. Haven't been in a hotel in Rome, but that location is very good and quite central to a lot of things within both walking distance, taking a bus (from the train station) and using trains.

We loved Rome Marriott Grand Hotel Flora. It is located in a more-quiet business area, next to the Borghese gardens. The hotel itself is nice with friendly staff. The rooms seemed rather large by European standards too. It has a great breakfast/café on the top (not included), with an incredible view or Rome. We liked it because we could walk to most major sites. The area felt clean and safe. The U.S. Embassy is around the corner. It is towards the top of one of Rome's hills, so it can be a bit of a walk back to the top, but we did it several times without issue. The Spanish Steps are maybe a 10 minute walk, and we also walked to the Parthenon and Trevi fountain from there. When we didn't feel like walking, it s a very short Uber/cab ride to major points in the city. There was a fantastic little coffee shop with excellent pastries across the street too. Also a newspaper stand where I could get my Coke Zero fix and snacks. Don't eat in the hotel's restaurant though - it was not good. Food options are somewhat limited in the area too, but Vladimir's was good. I will stay there again when we go back to Rome.

Be careful with Airbnb's in Rome. Many people have great luck with them, but others have had them canceled last minute, or shown up to find something very different than what was represented. It is best if you can get referrals to good ones from here or family/friends if you want to use them. We had one canceled after booking early and we decide to play it safe and go with a hotel instead.

When in Barcelona, we always stay at the Casa Camper Hotel--a five minute walk down a quiet street to Las Ramblas; not far from Place Catalunya. Clean, comfortable & quirky modern. Best rain shower in Europe. BEST part--they have complimentary food available 24 hours including soups, sandwiches, desserts, drinks, etc. Great service.

In Barcelona we love Hotel 1898 right on Las Ramblas. In Rome, the Pantheon Iconic Hotel, part of the Marriott group. Highly recommend both!

If you like your hotels smaller, with character and history, you might like the Hotel Continental Palacete in Barcelona and the Hotel Raphael in Rome.
The Hotel Continental Palacete is just off of Placa Catalunya and within walking distance to Casa Batllo, Casa Mila (La Pedera), and Rambla de Catalunya. One of the reasons I booked it was that they have a 24 hour snack buffet with breads, cold meats, cheese, fruit, drinks, etc (dinner is late in Spain and my spouse gets hangry). The decor is 18th century (they have "Versailles Suites") but also a little quirky.
I booked the Hotel Raphael in Rome because it is just off of Piazza Navona and my spouse likes to have a drink and people watch in cafes. The front of the Hotel is covered in bougainvillea and there's a roof top terrace/restaurant with a fabulous view of the city.

In Barcelona, we stayed here:

It's a short walk to Sagrada Familia. We liked that it was a 2BR/2BA apartment. There were 2 twin beds in one bedroom and a king bed for us. Plenty of space to spread out. There is a restaurant on the street level with multiple antique cars that I know ds22 (then 13) would have loved but the restaurant was closed the week we were there. Our driver said it's a popular week for vacations in Spain. This was in mid to late August. We had plenty of other options within a short walk.

in 2018 we did the cruise in the opposite direction (Barcelona to Rome). In Barcelona we stayed at H10 Universitat. They have several locations, but we found the Universitat location to be really easy to get to everything: https://www.h10hotels.com/en We had a suite that was perfect for our family of three.

In Rome, we stayed at an AirBnB so I can't help you with a hotel.

Last year, before our Greek Isles cruise on the Magic, we stayed at the Waldorf Cavalieri because we had Hilton points. While the hotel is a bit out of center, it’s not too far and a quick taxi to anywhere. It also had the most amazing breakfast and was a really nice room. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Not a hotel recommendation, but I do want to point out an AMAZING place to eat in Rome. This place was so AMAZING, my wife and I went back multiple times after I convinced her to try it the first time. This AMAZING place is just a tiny hole in the wall of a restaurant and not in the overly tourist trap areas. There was always a line of people waiting to eat there. It is in the center of Rome and not very far from the Colosseum that you could walk there without any trouble. It's called Al 42 by Pasta Chef Rione Monti. It's advertised as gourmet street food, and I can't say enough how AMAZING this place was. The manager spent time talking with us and explained that they don't have personal service, and then took the time to walk us through the entire menu, talk us through the ordering, food service process and serving ourselves our wine while helping us place an additional order. He then picked out a place for us to sit and showed us to our seats, while explaining how they don't have any service. The chef works there and the staff all very clearly love the business and care deeply for their craft and the success of their chef. If you have time, please, please, please make a point of eating there. I loved the carbonara plate and all the pasta is made fresh, in-house.

BTW, did I mention how much this place AMAZED me?

We stayed at Star Michelangelo in Rome, it's walking distance to the Vatican and had a great breakfast (included in the price.) I also highly recommend getting an early entry tour to the Vatican, it started at 7 but so worth it, we did not have crazy crowds that you typically get throughout the day.

We loved the Pantheon Ionic hotel in Rome. The location was great as it was within walking distance of so many things, but still on a quiet street. The rooftop bar had incredible views. The size of the room was surprisingly large, as well. We were using my husband's Marriott points for the stay, so we just booked a basic room and were very pleasantly surprised at how nice it was.

We stayed here

Sonder DO Plaça Reial

a little pricey but great location on Los Ramblas and great rooms
