We will be on the 11-5-16 sailing from New York to San Juan.
We have never been to NYC and thinking about arriving a day or 2 prior.
Need suggestions for hotels?
Rates seem crazy for a family of 4?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Haven't been there recently but last time we were in NYC we stayed at the Shoreham. It was this little boutique hotel but the prices were very reasonable. And it was within great walking distance of shops and Central Park if I remember correctly.

Check out hotwire, I have great luck with them in NYC. You can really narrow your location even if you dont pick the property (and that is fine since the number of choices is overwhelming). I plugged in 11/3-11/5 for you and I see a bunch of times square hotels 4 stars around 220 a night, which is really pretty good for NYC. It's still early though.

Prices are definitely expensive in NYC--the favorites I have stayed at are the Hampton Inn Times Square north (good walking distance to Times square, central park and theater district), and the Grand Hyatt (good walking distance to Times Square and connected to Grand Central Station). Subways are pretty easy to navigate but walking distance is always nice because you can see things on the way.

We stayed at the Park Central. It is a few blocks south of Central park on 7th ave. There is a metro stop right outside, and you are a few blocks from 5th ave, times square, and braodway is the next street over. It is also very close to Carnegie hall. I plugged in dates and found undiscoutned rates of below $250 a night, though I didn't use your occupancy.

I lived up in the area for a while. It's a bit further away but the Sheraton at Lincoln Harbor in Weekhawken, NJ is a wonderful hotel. It overlooks midtown and it's an amazing view of the city. You can get the ferry into NYC (sometimes the room rate includes tickets) and the ferry provide complimentary busing around the city. It's kind of expensive at $284 a night (for around the time you'll be travelling) but you can get around the entire city without much trouble which is good if you're not a subway person.

In NYC itself it is easy to get around cheap if you're willing to take the public transportation system. It just depends on what you're looking for.

Try checking groupon. NYC often has hotel deals there.

I've stayed at the Hilton garden Inn near Times Square several times as its been the cheapest. That is also a really easy walk to the port, a couple blocks from Times Square and the subway.

But be prepared that "cheap" hotels in NYC is a different definition than cheap other places.

You can check on hotwire (try Times Square North, Chelsea or Soho). They have good prices sometimes.

I also find Marriott hotels pretty good and a bit cheaper.

My best suggestion for NYC, where I go 5 or so times a year and went 15 times in 2015 {lol I like NYC like people like Disney} is to book a hotel you can deal with the price but make sure it's refundable and then download the HotelsTonight app. Then the week of your travel, start looking on the app and you will score a better hotel for much cheaper. We always have great success!

For a family of four you are best to book at a suite hotel. Doubletree Suites in Times Square is a fantastic location! Most of the big brands offer some sort of suite. IHG (Holiday Inn) has the Staybridge Suite in Times Square, which is also a very convenient location if you don't mind being nearer to the bus terminal. The Marriott Marquis in Times Square has fairly large rooms, so that might work for you as well.

Someone mentioned Sheraton Suites in Weekhawken. That's a great place to stay. Ferry to Manhattan or as an alternative you can take the PATH train.

I'd not consider a boutique hotel as the rooms are generally quite small. Same with some of the other independents. The Ameritania inTimes Square, for example, has very small rooms.

Good luck!

I'm on the same 11/5 cruise! We are a family of 5 staying at the double tree suites in Times Square. My parents and In laws are also traveling with us. I've never been to NYC either, so I'm hoping I made a good choice. Good luck in your travel planning!

Before I offer suggestions I have few questions
Are you driving or flying into NY if you are driving where are you driving from
If you are flying what airport are you flying into
