Hotels and events

Going down last week of April- first week of may. Is there any events in the park or nearby that would draw a big crowd?

Also, what season, is that considered regular? I'm trying to deide between onsite and maybe a dtd hotel. Any suggestions for dtd? We will be there a short amount of time 2-3 days. We will have a car. Would love to do WL again but Don't think that will happen.
