We will be driving to WDW and anticipate stopping for the night on the way down in either Macon or Tifton GA.

I'm hoping someone can give us suggestions on safe areas and clean hotels in either of these two towns. Thanks!!

I live in the Macon area. Unfortunately, Macon, which is a city of about 100,000 has a very high crime rate. As long as you stay in North Macon (Arkwright Rd., Tom Hill Sr. Blvd, and even the north end of Riverside Dr.) you should be fine. Your remaining drive time to the Orlando area will be about six hours. As for Tifton, it is approximately 100 miles south of Macon and is known for its hospitality. However, there are not a lot of nicer hotels/motels here, as there isn't much of a tourist base. In my opinion, you would be better off if thinking about Tifton, to travel the additional 50 or so miles to Valdosta. Valdosta is located right on the Florida line, and was recognized by ESPN as "Titletown USA" due to its High School and Collegiate sports. It is only about 3 hours from Orlando, and it is a nice town. Plus, there are plenty of nicer hotels/motels in the area as it is a military town and it also has a decent sized amusement park nearby. Plus, depending on what day you travel, you will get through all of the I75 road construction in Georgia, and it is smooth sailing on into Florida to the Turnpike and then on to the Kissimmee/WDW area!

Hope this Helps!!!

Hi there!
We drove from Cincy and stopped in a little place called "Warner-Robbins" (sp?) a bit south of Atlanta. I've done this drive numerous times, and this seems to be a really good stop. We were very pleased with the Hampton Inn (clean & safe, plus free breakfast with our stay--helped out with the budget!) Plus, we have Hilton Honors with hubby's business credit card, so I think the stay was free with a certain amount of points . . .
Have a fabulous trip no matter where you stay!!!

We drove to WDW in January and stopped overnight in Tifton on the way. We stayed in a Fairfield Inn right off I-75 and we really liked it. Free breakfast, reasonable rates, very nice rooms. I'd gladly stay there again. :thumbsup2

Thank you for all the suggestions!!

You've got me curious about the construction on i-75. Is this like road closure or what exactly are we looking at?

Thanks!!

For those of us in GA, we know that there is ALWAYS road construction on I-75! You won't encounter any road closures, just road construction.

I was going to say the same thing. I don't think I've ever made it through without hitting at least a couple of delays of an hour or so. Just figure it in.

I've stayed several times at the Residence Inn in Macon, which is quite nice. I also used Priceline once and got the Wingate. It was nice enough, though the room was a bit on the small side.

We've picked up the green hotel books at the rest areas and stayed at exit 5 several times and a few other places. Most are perfectly adequate for a single night.

Fairfield Inn Warner Robins!!! We always stay here on our way down, the pool is warm and a great size, breakfast is wonderful, employees are great, we just love it! It has great reviews on Tripadvisor, too.

The Hampton Inn (mentioned previously) is also nice, but we like the pool temperature at the Fairfield Inn better (if you have children that like a pool, and they make you sit in it with them while they play, you will appreciate the warmer water!).

Okay, just double checking that this was not major construction.

Warner Robbins, is that off i-75 quite aways?

We stay in Perry, just south of Macon, at the Hampton Inn right off I-75. It's really nice, and right next to a gas station, so it's easy to load up the car, get gas, and get right back on the highway in the morning.

I stopped last month at a Wingate Inn in Valdosta Georgia....it was extremely nice and brand new!!! There was a full HOT breakfast for free!!!

I would definitely suggest the Arkwright Rd or Riverside Drive area. You will find a lot of hotels in that area and they are within sight of I-75. Riverside parallels I-75 for a while, while Arkwright cuts across both at an angle.

About the construction on I-75. There is always construction. We frequently are up in the ATL area where the construction is going on and only once had to wait longer than 5 minutes as long as we were not there in rush hour. Taking I-285 could be worse than going straight through since it is more like NASCAR driving than interstate driving!!!:scared1: :scared1:

Having lived in Macon, I'd agree with the previous Macon resident- DON'T STAY IN MACON! It isn't safe- the only time I've ever been mugged in my life was in Macon at 75 & Riverside Drive. Unfortunately, the Warner Robbins exit @ 75 isn't any better. (This isn't to be confused with the town of Warner Robbins which is a ways off of the interstate.)

I'd stay in Tifton or Valdosta.

Thank you for the advice. We stayed in Macon on the way back from WDW in '06 and stayed in one scary place but was so tired I just dealt with it. I didn't want to repeat the same mistake again and had hoped we had chose a bad area, but it sounds like that is not the case.
We have decided to stick with Tifton area. Thanks!!

Check out tripadvisor.com for recommendations from 'real people'. I am familiar with the GA Hwy 520 exit off of I-75 and it has some decent hotels at that exit. (I have used tripadvisor for recommendations for the Daytona Beach area and not been disappointed). Have a great trip!!
