Hotel suggestions and firework questions for July 2012

Thought I'd post this here for perhaps some local knowledge.

Does anyone have suggestions for hotels around Carlsbad for the days we'll be going to Legoland? Also wondering about hotels in San Diego for our couple of days there.

Lastly, are there any beaches around LA/Anaheim that have fireworks shot over the ocean that are open to the public?

Not a local but we have visited San Diego. We stay near the convention center at the Hyatt.
It is a great area. There are several other hotels in that area plus it is a 15 min. walk to the Gaslamp. It is next to Seaport Village which is a bit touristy but we ate several meal at Buster's which we enjoyed.
We used a trolley tour which took us to the zoo, Old Town and Cornado Island.
