Hello!
This is our first time driving from Michigan. We plan on leaving around 2 or 3 pm on a Friday and driving straight thru to ASM. :) We know the way home we might be exhausted (from vacation??, lol) so we are planning on stopping for the night somewhere along I75. I think we are going to plan on leaving Disney around 3:00 and drive for 6-8 hours. Does anyone have any suggestions for nice safe & clean hotels? Thanks!

6-8 hours gives you a HUGE range, as does your average speed. You're looking at about a 120 mile swath there.

My opinion... drive until you think you're going to want to stop in the next hour. Use someone's smart phone to look up Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Courtyard by Mariott, Country Inn & Suites, etc. Call and see if they have a room for the night.

ETA: I think that should put us in between Atlanta & Chattanooga & we will be leaving Disney on a Saturday.

I don't thin there's too much between the North Atlanta suburbs and Dalton GA (about a half hour south of Chattanooga). Unless you feel super refreshed, I'd stop just north of Atlanta. All of the major chains are in that area.

Averaging 70-75 mph with 2-3 stops and no delays will put you from Macon in just under 6 hours to Dalton at about the 8 hour point. I agree with the above that it's best to find a chain you like and use a smartphone instead of locking yourself into a room. You may not be tired at that point and feel like driving further. We stayed at a Country Inn in Cordele GA heading down for our last trip and thought that is where we would stay coming back home, I wasn't tired and we stayed in North Atlanta, 165 miles away.

If you are taking the same route down, time yourself and look at the hotels you are interested in staying at and keep those in mind for the drive home.

There are some chain hotels in Calhoun, Ga. It's just before Dalton. They are in a nice, safe area and there are some chain restaurants nearby too.
Just please don't stop in south Atlanta. Sketchy.

Averaging 70mph+ WITH 2-3 stops? You're flying! :rotfl2:

Just kidding. I always calculate 60mph, and that usually handles all the stops. Obviously, with no stops you'll go further, but for long distances, the 60mph holds pretty close to the truth for me.

Figured the stop time into the hours, not the speed.
Using the 60 mph including stops, that works about perfect for our trip from KY, 838 miles in around 14 hours with smooth sailing.

I figured that's what you were doing. I think it's funny how the 60mph average works out. It takes into account the basic stops, and it's easy to do the math (something is 120 miles away, it will take 2 hours to get there).
