Hotel Royal Plaza standard rm question

I've read a lot of reviews of HRP Deluxe rooms. It seems everyone who stays in one loves it. However, all the reviews I see of the Standard rooms are less than glowing. That is, most reviews say the standard rooms stink, in more than one way. I have a reservation for a standard room with the Union Privilege rate of $69.00. Has anyone here stayed in one of those rooms and liked it? I'm getting a little nervous about HRP. $69.00 is a great rate, but not if it's a dump.

Hi Bill,

We stayed at the Plaza Oct 2002 - we were booked in a standard room but when we checked in didn't bother unpacking. We went straight back to front desk to get a swap. The room faced the parking lot and was very musty smelling and had some damp patches on the wall. It was badly in need of a refurb.

They upgraded us free to tower room but we had to stay one night in another standard room - this was a pool view and was much better - if they had given us it first we would have been ok. we accepted the upgrade though and moved the day after.

The tower rooms are much newer and we were very happy - it is a very nice hotel and I would stay again no problem. Call and ask for a price to upgrade - it should only be ~$15 / night and is well worth it. Kcarp got upgraded to a King Tower Suite from standard for $30 / night after a recent thread on the same subject.

It is a pity they can't get these rooms refurbed fast because the rest of the hotel is great.
