We are considering a visit to san Francisco and LA next Easter, including a visit to Disneyland. Does anyone have any recommendations for low cost hotels in San Francisco and Anaheim? We'll have a car so they don't need to be in the centre of things.

Regards

Rob

In san Francisco we have booked Comfort Inn By the Bay. Not been there yet, but going in Feb 2003, so can't really comment, but got a good rate of £74 per night for a triple room. When I get home I'll post some lonks. HTH:p

When I went a couple of years ago I stayed at the Holiday Inn on Market Street in SF. It was mid-range price. Very nice hotel, however it's not in the thick of things from the point of view of being away from Pier 39/Fishermans Wharf etc (Which are all pretty pricey). However, it was just round the corner from the Interstate that comes from the airport which was a blessing - not having to drive thru traffic after a long flight, and the Market area was considered at the time an upcoming area with regards to bars and restaurants, so it may well be even better now. It's 10 minutes walking distance to one of the Cable cars, Union Square etc. and it's on a corner of Market and ummmm, can't remember the other street, but it leads pretty much straight to the water front. There are buses on both streets to take you about the city when you are ready to do the tourist trek. Though at night, the area was described as 'colourful' in the Virgin brochure. I can see it might make some people feel uncomfortable as there are a number of homeless people around there - they do ask for money, but all that we met we very polite and non-confrontational about it, however I didn't think it any worse than walking around Soho in London.

When I stayed in Anaheim, I did it really budget. It was called the Carousel Inn and is on the road directly opposite the park - we could see the monorail running and the tip of the Matterhorn from outside our door. It was more motel, than hotel though if you know what I mean. The door to the room was outside and easily accessible to the outside world, not inside a corridor, if you know what I mean. It did still feel pretty safe though and just a couple of minutes walk down the road there were a good few shops and restaurants (where I first discovered Tony Roma's) so driving isn't essential if you feel like a night off.

This, however was about 5-6 years ago though.

I'll be at Disneyland next Easter. My sister is going a week before and is staying in San Fransisco. I managed to book her the Radisson hotel on Fisherman's Wharf for about $45 through Priceline. In Anaheim we are all staying at the Westcoast Anaheim which we paid even less for. It appears to be a decent 3* hotel. I have never been disappointed by using Priceline.

Rob,

The hotel I planned to stay in on my now postponed trip to SF was The Handlery Inn Union Square.I did loads of research, checked truth guides and had personal reccomendations for this hotel. It is in an excellent position close to the tram stops and has a swimming pool.On the website it also gives loads of excellent general information on things to do and see in and around SF, www.handlery.com

Have you thought about leaving your car hire until you are leaving SF,it is one of the few pleaces you really don't need a car to get around, possibly more of a hinderance than a help,it would save money too;)

Well, I've taken the plunge and booked flights to San Francisco and back from LA. Tracy, sounds like we'll be there at the same time: the week before Easter in San Francisco, and then down to LA for Easter at Disneyland. Can't wait. This will be my second visit to Disneyland, but my first at DCA. I've managed to save up enough Airmiles for the flights, including Club class back from LA to Heathrow on those fancy seats which convert into beds...

Used Priceline for the first time to book the hotel in San Francisco. Didn't have a preference for location, and ended up with a 4*, the Omni San Francisco, for $80 per night plus tax. Looks OK from their website, especially at that price. Kazzie, I agree that a car is unnecessary while we're in SF, so we'll wait until the LA part of our holiday. The car parking charge of $35 per day helped make up my mind!

Still undecided whether to fly or drive to LA, and what hotel to stay in while we're in Anaheim. All recommendations are welcome, and thanks for your advice so far.

Hi Rob

Sounds like a great trip being planned - I love California!

Not sure about whether to drive or fly from SF to LA - have only flown myself but understand some of the views from the ocean road south are fantastic.

When we were in Los Angeles in '94 we stayed at the Holiday Inn in Anaheim which was great for all we needed (mind you, have no idea what it's like now!). Very near Disneyland, walking distance to loads of restaurants and shops and it also had nice rooms and a good restaurant of it's own. There was also an outside pool, though we didn't use it.

When we stayed in SF it was an an awful hotel just north of Union Square and were warned by our taxi driver when he dropped us off not to turn right out of the hotel as that would take us right into the seedy part of town - not a good start!! However, I'm pleased to report that it wasn't the Omni!! :)

Rob,

That was a great deal on the hotel:)

Like Astrid I would advise driving to LA.One of the must see sights in California is that coastline The Big Sur.An opportunity to see another 'must see in your lifetime' place:p

I drove from LA to San Francisco a couple of years ago, up Hwy 1. Jane's not done this though, so I'm trying to balance the cost (time and money) of the flying v. driving options. If I could book a cheap internal flight I think we'd go for that option, having in extra day in LA. But if the flights were too expensive we might drive.

Found a cheap flight, £56 per person with Alaska Airlines, so we're going to fly. It means an extra day in LA, so we could try to see Universal Studios or something else in La La Land.

Sorry for the running commentary, but booking a Disney visit is so exciting!

Just booked the Westcoast Anaheim hotel through Priceline. $50 per night for 6 nights over Easter 2003. This is cheaper than I thought I'd pay at that time of year, considering the Westcoast is a 3* within walking distance of Disneyland.

Rob

it sounds fab - I am enjoying the running commentary - I just came back online to see if you had found a flight.

Rob,

Everything sounds really exciting. Keep the commentary coming:teeth:

Rob,

It's exciting, keep up the good work;) Those flights are great, good job!

Rob very interesting thread.

I am also going to California next year so was interested to see about prices/flights etc.

We are flying into Vegas (I know it is not California) and then flying to LA to stay at Anaheim, I have booked the Hilton Anaheim but was also looking at the Westcoast, let me know what it's like and I will see if it is worth changing my booking.

I know you have booked the flight, but I would have said fly also as it saves loads of time and as you say you get the extra day. When we went last time we flew to LA then Vegas, then SF and down to San Diego, it just seemed to save loads on the driving and we just had the car at each destination.

We have stayed at the Omni San Francisco and it is a really good hotel.

Happy planning ;)

Helen

Thanks for that Helen. If you have any more info about the Omni (proximity to the Bart, local coffee shops/cafes, etc) I'd love to know.

Regards

Rob
